Chapter 3

The Ink of Betrayal

Isolde the Mage was harder to reach. She didn't drink. She hid in the Royal Library, burying herself in scrolls, searching for a justification for what they had done.
Elara found her three nights later in the restricted section.
Isolde looked frantic. She was surrounded by open books about "Soul Seals" and "Abyssal Physics."
"It doesn't make sense," Isolde muttered to herself, scratching notes furiously. "The energy density required... a single human soul shouldn't have been enough. Why did the breach close?"
"Because she closed it," a voice said from the darkness.
Isolde spun around, her wand raised. "Who's there?"
Elara stepped into the circle of lamplight. She pulled back her veil.
Isolde dropped her wand. She stared at the pale, marble-white skin, the eyes that were entirely black, the veins that pulsed with starlight.
"Elara?" Isolde breathed. "You're... you're a lich. A revenant."
"I am something else," Elara said, walking closer. The books on the table began to rot, the paper turning to grey sludge as she passed. "Why, Isolde? Why did you agree to it? Torian was a coward, but you? You were my friend. You knew the magic. You knew a sacrifice wasn't necessary."
Isolde backed up against the bookshelf. She was trembling. "I... I had to."
"Why?"
"Kaelen," Isolde sobbed. "He made a deal with the King. The breach wasn't the problem. The King wouldn't let him marry Princess Amara as long as the 'Saintess' was in the party. The Church demanded Kaelen marry the Saintess to fulfill the prophecy."
Elara stopped.
The air in the room dropped thirty degrees. Frost formed on the bookshelves.
"Politics?" Elara whispered.
It wasn't a noble sacrifice. It wasn't to save the world from a dark god.
Kaelen had killed her because she was inconvenient. She was a roadblock to his royal wedding.
"He wanted the crown," Isolde cried. "He promised me the position of Court Archmage if I kept quiet. I didn't want to hurt you, Elara! But he said it would be quick!"
The rage that exploded in Elara wasn't hot. It was absolute zero.
She felt stupid. She felt small. She had loved Kaelen once, in a naive, girlish way. She had believed in his righteousness. And she was just a stepping stone.
"I feel... hollow," Elara whispered, clutching her chest.
* Do not weep, my bride.*
The shadows in the library erupted. Xylia manifested physically. She burst from Elara’s back like black wings, forming a towering, multi-armed silhouette behind her.
Isolde screamed, but Xylia silenced her with a wave of a shadowy hand.
Xylia wrapped her arms around Elara from behind, cocooning her.
"They saw a tool," Xylia murmured into Elara’s ear, her voice audible to the terrified Mage. "They saw a disposable thing. But I see a galaxy. I see the end of their world."
Elara leaned back into the monster. She felt the love radiating from Xylia—obsessive, terrifying, and completely true.
"Isolde," Elara said, her voice doubling with Xylia’s. "You wanted to be Archmage? You wanted knowledge?"
Xylia’s tentacles shot out. They didn't strike Isolde; they phased *into* her head.
Isolde shrieked as the knowledge of the Void was forced into her mind. Her brain couldn't handle the geometry of the abyss. She clawed at her eyes.
"See what I see," Elara commanded.
Isolde collapsed, gibbering madness, her mind shattered beyond repair. She would live, but she would never read another word.
"Two," Elara said.
