Chapter 3

The Quiet Room

Floor eight was surprisingly calm. It was a piano bar, preserved in pristine condition, untouched by the rot consuming the rest of the hotel. A safe zone.
They slumped onto a velvet sofa. Val found a bottle of scotch behind the bar. It was real. He poured two glasses.
Lyra took hers with shaking hands. "My readings say the magical density doubles on the next floor. The entity at the top... it’s strong."
Val downed his drink. The alcohol did nothing for him—his metabolism burned the toxin before he could feel a buzz—but the ritual of it was grounding. "We’ll kill it."
"You talk about death like it’s a chore," Lyra said softly.
"It is when you can't participate," Val said, staring at the amber liquid. "I’ve taken bullets, poison, curses, and falls that would turn a man to paste. I wake up every time. It gets boring, Lyra. The stakes... they stop mattering."
Lyra set her glass down hard. "That is the most arrogant thing I’ve ever heard."
Val blinked, surprised by her anger.
"You think life is meaningless because you can't lose it?" She gestured to her chest. "I have a congenital defect. My heart works at sixty percent capacity. Every day I wake up is a statistical anomaly. I fight for every breath. And you... you have infinite time, infinite health, and you treat it like a burden?"
She leaned forward, her eyes blazing behind the thick lenses. "Your invincibility isn't for *you*, Valerian. It’s for the people who break. You can walk through fire so I don’t have to burn. That’s not a curse. That’s a gift. Stop wasting it feeling sorry for yourself."
Val stared at her. For decades, he had viewed his condition as a cage. She saw it as a tool. A purpose.
He looked at her fragile wrists, the blue veins visible under the skin. If she fell, she wouldn’t get up. The realization hit him with the force of a physical blow: He was terrified. Not for himself, but for her.
"You're right," Val said quietly. "I'm sorry."
The building shuddered. The lights flickered.
"Break time's over," Val said, standing up and offering her a hand. "Let's go finish this."
