Chapter 4

The Design

By the fifth day, Kael was stable. The tremors had stopped.
The dynamic in the Iron Keep had shifted. The collar was gone. Aris wasn't a prisoner anymore; he was a roommate who happened to be from an enemy state.
They ate rations together on the floor. Kael told stories of the Deadlands—of fighting mech-worms in the acid rain, of building a community from scraps. Aris found himself listening, not to analyze, but to understand.
But the anomaly bothered him. Why did his bio-signature stabilize a Chimera?
"I need to access your server logs," Aris said. "I need to understand the origin of your cybernetics to prevent a relapse."
Kael hesitated, then nodded. "Access code is 'Rogue'."
Aris plugged into the bunker’s mainframe. He expected crude, stolen code. Instead, he found encrypted files bearing the seal of the Ivory Zone’s "Project Chimera."
He decrypted them.
The screen filled with schematics. Not of Kael. Of *Aris*.
* Subject: Aris Thorne.*
* Designation: Bio-Siphon.*
* Purpose: Living regulation unit for Chimera-class Super Soldiers.*
The room spun. Aris gripped the console.
He wasn't just a doctor. He wasn't born. He was decanted. His frailty, his high-functioning intellect, his specific bio-electric output—it was all designed. He was created to be a battery. A leash.
The City created the Chimeras to fight their wars, but the Chimeras were too unstable. So they created the Siphons to control them.
Aris turned around. Kael was standing in the doorway, holding two mugs of terrible synthetic coffee.
"You knew," Aris whispered.
Kael froze. He set the mugs down slowly.
"I suspected," Kael said. "I felt the pull. The Resonance. I hacked the archives years ago. I saw a file with your face on it."
"You kidnapped me to use me," Aris accused, his voice trembling. "I am just a battery to you."
"No!" Kael roared. The force of it shook the dust from the ceiling.
Kael crossed the room, grabbing Aris by the shoulders. "I kidnapped you because the file said 'Termination Date: Cycle 40.' That’s next week, Aris. Once a Siphon matures, they harvest the neural tissue and discard the body."
Aris stared at him. "Termination?"
"I didn't steal a battery," Kael said, his voice breaking. "I stole you to save you. I couldn't let them kill you. Not... not my Mate."
The word hung in the air. *Mate*. A primitive, biological term for the Resonance.
Aris looked at the terrifying Warlord, the monster of the Deadlands. And he saw the truth. The City—his home, his creator—was the villain. Kael was just the man trying to keep him alive.
Aris realized something else. The Clarity chip was silent. His emotions were screaming, and for once, he didn't want to shut them up.
"You should have told me," Aris said softly.
"I wanted you to fix me first," Kael admitted, looking ashamed. "I was selfish. I wanted to know if the bond was real, or if it was just the programming."
"It’s programming," Aris said, stepping closer. He placed a hand on Kael’s chest. "But the variables... the variables suggest we can rewrite the code."
