Chapter 2

The Architect and the Arsonist

The planning sessions took place in the sensory deprivation library during "quiet hours." It was the only place where the surveillance was audio-only, and Silas knew exactly which corner of the room created a dead zone for the microphones.
"We need a route to the basement," Silas whispered, spreading a hand-drawn map on the low table between them. "The service elevator in the East Wing bypasses the main checkpoints."
Elian studied the map. His mind, usually a fog of depression and sedatives, was razor-sharp. He felt alive for the first time since the accident.
"The service elevator requires a retinal scan," Elian pointed out. "Staff level or higher."
"I’m working on that," Silas said. He reached out and brushed a stray hair from Elian’s forehead.
Elian flinched, then leaned into the touch. It was pathetic, he knew, to crave contact this much. But Silas touched him with a casual possessiveness that made Elian’s breath hitch. It wasn’t the clinical touch of a nurse; it was the touch of a partner.
"How?" Elian asked, his voice shaking slightly.
"Lena," Silas said. "The night nurse on Ward 4. She’s sweet. Gullible. She thinks I’m a misunderstood poet."
A pang of jealousy, sharp and hot, spiked in Elian’s chest. "You’re seducing her?"
Silas laughed softly. "I’m manipulating her, Elian. There’s a difference. I don’t want her. She’s boring. She’s part of the system."
He grabbed Elian’s hand, interlacing their fingers. Elian stared at their joined hands—Silas’s strong, scarred fingers against his own pale, slender ones.
"I want someone who understands the weight of the cage," Silas whispered. "I want you. When we get out, Elian... imagine it. Rio. Tokyo. Anywhere. With your brain and my... skillset. We’ll be untouchable."
Elian looked up into those electric blue eyes. He saw a reflection of himself that wasn't broken. He saw a king.
"Rio," Elian agreed, tightening his grip on Silas’s hand. "I’ve never been."
"Then I’ll take you," Silas promised. "But first, we need the eye."
