Chapter 4

The Blackmail

The escape route led them past the Server Farm—the central nervous system of the Alabaster Institute.
"Stop," Silas ordered as they passed the heavy glass doors.
"We’re on a schedule," Elian argued, checking his watch. "The guard rotation cycles in eight minutes."
"I need to make a withdrawal," Silas said. He swiped the cloned copy of Lena’s retinal scan. The doors hissed open.
Elian wheeled inside, confused. "What are you doing? We need to get to the basement."
Silas went straight to the main console. He pulled a drive from his pocket. "Plug this in. I need you to download the directory labeled 'Omega-Black'."
Elian froze. "Omega-Black? Those are the intake files. The leverage."
The Alabaster Institute didn't just house the unwanted; it collected their secrets. Every illicit affair, every financial crime, every genetic defect of the ruling families was stored here. It was the insurance policy that kept the Institute funded.
"Silas," Elian said slowly. "This isn't just an escape."
Silas turned. The blue light of the servers illuminated the sharp angles of his face. "Freedom costs money, Elian. Rio isn't free. With these files, we don't just disappear. We become the people who pull the strings. We blackmail the blackmailers."
"You used me," Elian realized. "You didn't need me for the sensors. You could have blown the doors. You needed me for the decryption."
Silas walked over and placed his hands on the armrests of Elian’s chair, boxing him in.
"I needed you for both," Silas said. His voice was soft, seductive. "Does it matter? We’re leaving. And we’re going to be rich. We won’t just be free, Elian. We’ll be gods."
He leaned in and kissed Elian. It was hard, bruising, and tasted of adrenaline.
Elian’s mind screamed at him to stop. This was greed. This was madness. But the kiss... the kiss promised a future where Elian wasn't a cripple in a white room. It promised power.
Elian broke the kiss. He looked at the console.
"Plug it in," Elian whispered.
He typed the command. The files began to transfer.
