Chapter 4

The Trial of Gold

The Trial Chamber was a place of jagged basalt and ancient runes, located deep beneath the estate. It was here that the Law of Rebound was traditionally invoked.
Elias was chained to a central pillar, his body slumped. The Black Mirror sat on a pedestal before him, vibrating with the concentrated evil of a decade of Hesper’s crimes. To anyone with magical sight, Elias looked like a monster—a black hole of spiritual filth.
Alistair entered the chamber, flanked by the estate guards. His face was a mask of cold fury.
"Lord Vane," Hesper said, her voice dripping with fake tears. "To think he would steal the Mirror of Ancestors and fill it with such malice. My own stepson, a common thief."
Alistair walked toward the pillar. He looked at Elias, who was barely conscious. The white-gold light in Elias’s hands was gone, replaced by the oily blackness of the mirror’s projection.
"Lord Alistair," Elias wheezed, looking up. "I… I didn't…"
"The evidence is absolute," Alistair said, his voice echoing in the basalt chamber. "The weight of this karma would crush a city. By the laws of the Arbiter’s Office, I must pass judgment."
He raised his weir-wood staff.
Elias closed his eyes, waiting for the end. He felt Alistair’s magic wash over him—not a strike, but a cold, probing wave of energy.
"The Law of Rebound states that karma cannot be given, only earned," Alistair’s voice boomed, shifting in tone. "It states that the soul is the only true witness."
Alistair stepped closer to Hesper, not Elias.
"Lady Hesper, you claim this filth belongs to the boy?"
"It is obvious!" she cried.
"Then you will not mind if I break the seal," Alistair said, a grim smile appearing on his face. "If the karma is his, it will stay with him. If it is not… the Law of Rebound will seek its true master."
Alistair didn't wait for her to answer. He slammed the butt of his staff into the Black Mirror.
The glass shattered.
A tidal wave of black, oily energy erupted into the room. It swirled around Elias, a screaming vortex of Hesper’s greed, her lies, and her cruelty. It pressed against him, trying to find a home in his spirit.
But Elias Thorne had spent ten years scrubbing that very filth. He had remained kind while being treated as a ghost. He had remained pure while being used as a battery.
The black energy found no purchase. There was no "hook" of similar evil in Elias for the karma to latch onto.
The vortex paused, then let out a sound like a dying god. It turned, its speed doubling, and surged across the room toward Lady Hesper.
"No!" she screamed, throwing up her hands.
But magic of this magnitude could not be blocked. It hit her like a physical blow, the black oil sinking into her skin, her hair, her eyes. The "Rebound" was absolute. Every ounce of misery she had inflicted on others was now hers to carry. She collapsed, her form becoming a shadow of itself, consumed by the very rot she had cultivated.
The silver collar around Elias’s neck shattered, unable to withstand the surge of pure justice.
