The Suffocating Quiet

The aftermath was a slow, creeping dawn of reality.
They lay tangled in the heavy white hotel sheets. The physical urgency had burned itself out, leaving behind a profound stillness. Outside the window, the city was entirely quiet, the deep black of the sky just beginning to hint at the dark blue of early morning.
Silas lay with his head resting on Elias’s shoulder. His fingertips lightly traced the expanse of Elias’s bare chest, drawing slow, invisible circles over his heart. It was a gesture of immense tenderness, a quiet invitation.
Elias stared at the ceiling, his body rigid. The cocoon of silence they had built during their intimacy was rapidly cooling, transforming into something suffocating and heavy.
* Say something,* the rhythm of Silas’s fingers seemed to tap against his skin. *Tell me you missed me. Tell me you’ve changed. Give me something to hold onto.*
The air in the room grew thick. Silas’s breathing was soft, but the expectation radiating from him was deafening. Elias’s heart hammered against his ribs. The words were right there, lodged in the back of his throat. *I never stopped loving you. I hate my empty apartment. Please don't leave me again.* But the fear rose like bile. If he spoke, he made it real. If he spoke, he handed Silas the power to reject him in the harsh light of day. Elias was an architect; he knew that the moment you exposed the structural load-bearing beams, you exposed the building’s vulnerability. He couldn't do it. The terrified, stubborn core of him clamped down hard.
Elias closed his eyes tightly, willing the moment to pass. He actively chose the safety of his walls over the warmth of the man beside him. He stopped stroking Silas’s hair. He let his arm go limp.
Silas’s hand stopped tracing circles.
The shift in the room's atmosphere was instantaneous and brutal. The temperature seemed to drop ten degrees. Silas slowly pushed himself up, the sheets pooling around his waist. He looked down at Elias, his silhouette outlined by the faint blue light from the window. The exhaustion had returned to Silas’s eyes, magnified tenfold.
"Is this still all we are?" Silas’s voice broke the silence, raw and devastatingly quiet. "Just quiet rooms and ghosts?"
