Breach and Darkness

Before Roman could process the sheer magnitude of the failure, a piercing, high-decibel shriek shattered the quiet of the cabin.

It was the perimeter alarm. Something had tripped the motion sensors at the edge of the treeline, two hundred yards out.

The argument, the PR headlines, the insecurities—all of it vanished instantly. Elias was no longer the wounded lover; he was a weapon unsheathed.

"Boots. Now," Elias barked, moving toward the heavy gun safe in the corner of the room with terrifying speed.

Roman scrambled to comply, shoving his feet into the heavy work boots, his hands shaking so violently he could barely tie the laces.

"Are they here? How could they get here so fast?" Roman asked, his voice pitching high with panic.

"They didn't get here just now," Elias said grimly, punching the code into the safe and pulling out a matte-black shotgun and a heavy tactical flashlight. "They tracked the Porsche weeks ago. They've been sitting in the woods, waiting for us to come online to confirm we were inside."

The moment the words left Elias’s mouth, the cabin plunged into absolute, suffocating darkness. The stalker had cut the main breaker outside.

The sudden absence of the firelight and the hum of the refrigerator made the silence agonizing. Roman stood frozen in the pitch black, his breathing ragged and loud in his own ears.

"Roman," Elias whispered from the dark. A strong, calloused hand grabbed Roman’s shoulder, pulling him close. "Listen to me. We are not staying in the fatal funnel. If they breach the doors, we're trapped. We are going out the storm cellar exit, and we are moving into the treeline. Do not let go of my belt. Do you understand?"

"Yes," Roman breathed.

Elias guided them through the dark cabin purely by memory. They descended the narrow, creaking stairs into the root cellar. Elias pushed open the heavy wooden bulkhead doors, revealing the chaotic, freezing nightmare of the storm raging outside. The wind was howling, whipping the freezing rain sideways.

They slipped out into the night, the darkness absolute.
