Chapter 3
The Breaking Point
❧
Something inside Caleb’s chest finally snapped.
The polite, carefully constructed filter he used to navigate the world completely disintegrated. He turned his head, meeting Julian’s dark, mocking stare with a sudden, blazing fury that clearly caught the older man off guard.
"Are you ever exhausted by it?" Caleb asked, his voice low, shaking with unchecked anger.
Julian’s brow furrowed slightly. "By what?"
"By the act," Caleb spat, leaning toward the center console, refusing to shrink back. "By this relentless, arrogant performance. You sit there and call me a coward, but you are the most terrified person I have ever met."
Julian’s jaw tightened. "Watch your tone, Caleb."
"No," Caleb fired back, his heart hammering wildly against his ribs. "I've watched my tone for three months while you belittled me in staff meetings and mocked me in the hallways. You think your rudeness makes you look strong, Julian? It doesn't. It makes you look weak. You push everyone away, you insult them, you tear them down before they can even try to know you, because you are terrified that if you let someone close, they might realize there's nothing underneath all that miserable, bitter armor."
The air in the car practically sparked.
Julian unbuckled his seatbelt with a violent, metallic click.
Before Caleb could react, Julian lunged across the center console. He grabbed the lapels of Caleb’s damp trench coat, shoving Caleb backward until his shoulders hit the passenger door. Julian’s larger frame crowded into Caleb’s space, pinning him there, hovering over him like a storm cloud.
"You think you know me?" Julian snarled, his face inches from Caleb’s. His breath was warm, smelling faintly of mint and coffee. "You know absolutely nothing about me."
"I know you're hiding," Caleb breathed, his chest heaving, his own hands coming up to grip Julian’s wrists. He fully intended to push the man away, but his fingers simply curled into the wet fabric of Julian’s suit sleeves, anchoring him there instead.
"I am not hiding from you," Julian gritted out.
"Then why are you shaking?" Caleb challenged, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper.
The yelling abruptly died in their throats.
The silence that rushed into the space between them was deafening, heavier than the rain pounding on the steel roof above them. Caleb stared up into Julian’s eyes and saw the raw, furious panic swirling there.
But it wasn't hatred.
The anger that had been fueling them suddenly transmuted, shifting into an entirely different, infinitely more dangerous kind of friction. The hostility melted away, leaving only a raw, heavy, undeniable tension.
Julian didn't pull back. His grip on Caleb’s coat slowly loosened, his long fingers sliding upward to rest against Caleb’s collarbone. Julian’s gaze flickered, dropping from Caleb’s wide eyes down to his lips. He swallowed hard, his throat working.
The space between them shrank to a fraction of an inch. Caleb’s breath hitched, his eyelashes fluttering as he felt the ghost of Julian’s breath against his mouth. The air in the car was thick, suffocating, burning with the sudden, terrifying realization that every insult, every glare, every bitter argument had merely been a desperate cover for a mutual, consuming obsession.
Julian tilted his head, his dark eyes falling shut as he leaned in, surrendering to the agonizing, magnetic pull.
