The Monster Revealed

The ocean suddenly erupted.
A massive, concussive wave of magical energy blasted outward from the cove, knocking Elara backward onto the sand. The bioluminescence flared to a blinding, terrible intensity, painting the entire cliffside in ghostly blue light.
From the center of the glow, Caspian emerged.
He didn't wade through the water; he walked on top of it, striding confidently toward the shore. The dark, shadowy waters that had always clung to his waist fell away, revealing a body clad in fine, woven kelp that shimmered like dark silk.
But as he stepped onto the dry sand—a feat he had claimed was impossible—the beautiful, devoted illusion began to crack.
Elara scrambled to her feet, a cold, terrifying dread settling in her stomach. "Caspian? Is it... is the curse broken?"
He stopped a few feet away from her. The ethereal beauty was still there, but the warmth, the devotion, the absolute worship that had defined his gaze was entirely gone. His black eyes were flat, apathetic, and cruel.
He looked at her not as a queen, but as a discarded tool.
"It is broken," Caspian said. His voice no longer hummed with that soothing, hypnotic melody. It was cold, sharp, and utterly devoid of emotion.
He did not reach for her. He did not pull her into his arms.
"We are free," Elara whispered, taking a step toward him, desperate to find the monster who had loved her. "We can go to your kingdom now."
Caspian let out a sound that resembled a laugh, though it held no humor. "My kingdom? My kingdom is up there, Elara." He pointed a long, pale finger toward the towering cliffs of Somerset House.
"What?" Elara breathed, her mind struggling to comprehend the nightmare unfolding before her.
"I am ancient, little princess," Caspian sneered, circling her slowly, surveying her trembling form with profound disdain. "I have been trapped in this miserable puddle for four hundred years, watching you ridiculous mortals build your castles and hoard your gold. The magic demanded royal blood given willingly by a betrayed heart to break my chains. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to engineer that?"
Elara froze, the blood draining from her face. "Engineer..."
"Your husband was arrogant, yes," Caspian said smoothly, stopping before her. "But it took a great deal of my song, whispered through the plumbing of your palace, to push him into the bed of your lady-in-waiting right in front of the entire court. I needed you broken. I needed you desperate. I needed you to hate him enough to kill him."
Elara’s knees buckled. She fell to the wet sand, staring up at the creature she had traded her soul for. "No... no, you loved me. You showed me the magic... you breathed for me..."
"A parlor trick," Caspian dismissed coldly. "Sirens do not love, Elara. We consume. You were the bait, and your husband was the key."
As he spoke, a horrifying transformation began. Caspian’s pale skin shifted, color blooming across his cheeks. His midnight hair lightened into a familiar, golden blonde. His sharp, alien features smoothed and morphed until he was an exact, flawless replica of Crown Prince Julian.
He looked down at his new hands, smiling a cruel, familiar smile. "The Prince survives his midnight stroll. Tragically, his pregnant wife slipped on the rocks and was lost to the sea."
"No!" Elara screamed, scrambling backward toward the stairs. "I will tell them! I will tell the court what you are!"
Caspian—wearing her dead husband's face—merely gestured toward the water.
The ocean did not glow azure. It turned pitch black.
The dark waves surged forward with unnatural speed, wrapping around Elara’s ankles like liquid chains. The water was freezing, filled with a heavy, dragging magic.
"You murdered the Crown Prince, Elara," Caspian said softly, turning his back on her and beginning the long walk up the cliffside stairs to claim his new kingdom. "The sea demands its due for spilling royal blood. Your curse is just beginning."
The dark water violently yanked her backward.
Elara screamed as she was dragged into the freezing surf. She thrashed, she fought, but the ocean was impossibly strong. As the water closed over her head, she opened her mouth to scream Caspian's name, but no sound came out. Her vocal cords tore, dissolving into nothingness.
The magic ripped into her flesh, reshaping her legs, fusing them together, sealing her mouth shut. She was trapped in the freezing, silent dark.
Above, the monster wearing the crown stepped into the warmth of the palace, while Crown Princess Elara—voiceless, doomed, and eternally betrayed—sank into the abyss, becoming the newest, silent siren of the Blackwood Cove.
