Chapter 2
The Umbra Estate
❧
Clara fell through the shadows, a sensation like tumbling through freezing, liquid silk. When her boots finally hit solid ground, her knees buckled.
Strong arms caught her instantly. Valerius held her up, waiting for her breathing to steady.
"Open your eyes, Clara."
She did. They were no longer in the glass penthouse of the sky. They had descended into the earth. The Umbra Estate was a sprawling, subterranean palace hidden within the magical bedrock of the city. The architecture was ancient and impossibly luxurious—gothic arches carved from dark mahogany, floors of polished black marble, and massive fireplaces roaring with emerald-green magical flames. The furniture was all deep velvet and dark leather. It was a lair. It was a sanctuary.
Valerius released her waist, stepping back to give her space, though his golden eyes never left her face. He reached out and smoothly untied the silver masquerade mask from the back of her head, letting it clatter uselessly to the marble floor.
"You have a habit of hiding your beautiful face behind pathetic things," Valerius noted, his tone conversational, yet heavily laced with that intoxicating, demonic resonance.
"You kidnapped me," Clara said, taking a step back, her hands raising instinctively to summon a defensive ward. Her magic—the dark, chaotic energy she had suppressed for years—sparked at her fingertips in a violent violet hue.
Valerius looked at her glowing fingertips and smiled. It was a devastating expression, full of sharp teeth and pure, unadulterated sin. "I rescued you. You were about to let them break your wrists rather than defend yourself. Your restraint is a tragedy, little witch."
"I don't know you. I don't know why a Shadow Demon would care about a ruined outcast," Clara said, her voice shaking, though she refused to lower her hands. "I have nothing. No money. No status. If you are going to eat my soul, you'll find it incredibly bitter."
Valerius laughed—a low, dark rumble that made the emerald flames in the hearth dance. He walked toward a crystal decanter on a heavy oak desk, pouring a measure of amber liquid into two glasses.
"I am an Incubus, Clara. I do not eat souls," he said, turning back and offering her a glass. "I feed on desire. I feed on the things people lock away in the dark. And for six months, you have been radiating the most magnificent, intoxicating aura of regret and repressed fury I have ever encountered. It called to me across the city."
Clara stared at the glass, then at him. "You stalked me because I'm miserable?"
"I observed you," Valerius corrected smoothly, taking a slow sip from his glass. "Because you are a creature of immense dark power pretending to be a domestic pet. It offends my sensibilities." He set the glass down and leaned against the desk, crossing his long legs. "But I did not bring you here merely to admire your misery. I have a business proposition."
Clara lowered her hands, the violet magic fizzling out. "What kind of proposition?"
Valerius tapped a heavy, leather-bound book sitting on his desk. It was locked with complex, glowing silver runic arrays. "This is a ledger. It was stolen from my estate by a very foolish mortal. The encryption is High Council standard. Witches' magic. Demonic energy cannot unravel it without incinerating the pages."
"You want me to decode it," Clara said, her analytical mind immediately grasping the problem.
"You were the top magical cryptographer in your academy class," Valerius said. "I want you to break the cipher. In exchange, I offer you asylum. The High Council cannot breach the Umbra Estate. You can stay here, hidden, protected, and fully provided for. And when you are done, I will pay you enough untraceable gold to relocate your family to any continent you desire."
Clara looked at the terrifying monster standing in the emerald firelight. He was offering her exactly what she needed—money, safety, and a way out of the crushing humiliation of her daily life.
But he was a demon. Every story she had ever been told warned her against bargaining with his kind.
"Why me?" she asked, her voice dropping to a whisper. "You could have hired any corrupt witch in the underground to do this."
Valerius pushed off the desk, stalking toward her until he was mere inches away. He reached out, his clawed finger tracing the line of her collarbone, sending a shockwave of heat through her veins that made her gasp.
"Because," Valerius whispered, his golden eyes blazing with a raw, undeniable hunger, "I want *you*, Clara. I want to watch you unravel. I want to see what happens when the perfect lady finally stops apologizing for the monster she keeps locked inside."
Clara’s breath hitched. For the first time in her life, the dark, chaotic magic in her chest did not recoil in fear of being discovered. It reached out, humming in harmonious response to the demon’s touch.
"Deal," Clara breathed.
