Chapter 6

The Unapologetic Queen

The scandal of the century broke before dawn.
The magical broadcast reached every corner of the metropolis. High Councilor Aris, weeping and terrified, confessed to the entire plot. Julian Thorne was arrested by dawn, dragged from his bed in silk pajamas, screaming about his rights as he was hauled to the deep-ward prisons.
The High Council, desperate to save face and terrified of the witch who had allied herself with the demonic underground, immediately issued a formal, groveling apology. They cleared the Vance name. They restored their wealth tenfold.
A week later, a delegation from the Council arrived at the grand iron gates of the Umbra Estate.
Clara stood on the balcony overlooking the subterranean cavern, wearing a gown of sheer black silk, a heavy, dark ruby pendant resting against her collarbone. She looked down at the terrified diplomats below.
"Lady Vance," the lead diplomat called out, his voice shaking. "The Council formally invites you to return to the Apex. Your seat in the high society is waiting. We beg you to return and restore honor to our ranks."
Clara looked at the trembling men. Once, she would have wept with joy at this offer. Once, she would have done anything to be accepted back into their glittering, hollow world.
She felt a heavy, warm presence step up behind her. Valerius wrapped his arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder. The heat of him, the intoxicating smell of dark spice and devotion, settled her soul completely.
Clara looked down at the diplomats, a slow, wicked, unapologetic smile curving her lips.
"Tell the Council," Clara called down, her voice echoing through the cavern, "that I prefer the dark."
She turned in Valerius’s arms. Right there, on the balcony, in full view of the horrified, scandalized High Council delegation, she grabbed the lapels of the demon’s suit and pulled him down into a bruising, passionate, deeply scandalous kiss.
The diplomats gasped, turning away in shock, fleeing back to the surface.
When Clara finally pulled back, breathless, Valerius was staring at her with such intense, fiery adoration it made her heart ache.
"You are entirely ruined, my lady," Valerius murmured, brushing a dark curl from her forehead.
Clara laughed, a sound of pure, unadulterated joy. She rested her hands on his chest, feeling the steady beat of the monster’s heart beneath her palms. There was no more regret. There were no more cages.
"Good," Clara whispered, pulling her demon down for another kiss. "Ruin looks magnificent on me."
