The Sanctuary

The warded medical outpost in the catacombs was a stark contrast to the hellscape above. It was dimly lit by floating orbs of soft light, quiet, and thick with the earthy scent of healing herbs and sterile alcohol.
Rhea shoved Caelum onto a stone slab that served as an examination table. Her hands were shaking—a rare loss of control that she furiously tried to hide as she ripped away the leather and chainmail obstructing his wound.
"Buy me a drink first, sweetheart," Caelum teased, though his voice was slightly strained. He leaned back on his elbows, watching her with an intensity that made the small, enclosed space feel suddenly suffocating.
"Shut up, Caelum," Rhea ordered, her voice devoid of its usual steady calm. She grabbed a cloth soaked in holy water—a substance that stung demonic flesh—and pressed it hard into the laceration.
Caelum hissed, his abdominal muscles contracting under her touch, but he didn't pull away. He was incredibly warm, his skin radiating a supernatural heat that seeped through Rhea’s gloves.
"You were distracted," she accused, her eyes fixed stubbornly on the wound rather than the sculpted expanse of his chest. "You're a commander of the Avernus Legion. You don't get flanked by low-level scavengers unless you let your guard down."
"I was looking at you," Caelum replied simply. The wicked humor had vanished from his tone, replaced by something deep, raw, and uncomfortably honest.
Rhea’s hands faltered. She looked up, instantly regretting it as she met his heavy, golden gaze. The combustible chemistry between them, an undercurrent that had sparked since the day he defected to the allied camp, flared violently in the quiet room.
"That's exactly why you shouldn't look at me," Rhea whispered, her chest tight. "Attachment in this war is a death sentence, Caelum. I patch people up, and then I watch them die. I won't do it with you. I can't."
Caelum reached up, his large, calloused hand wrapping gently around her wrist. His thumb brushed over her racing pulse. "I took that blade because the fiend was aiming for your blind spot, Rhea. I'd take a thousand more if it meant they never left a scratch on you."
The confession shattered the last of her professional armor. The absolute certainty in his voice bypassed every logical defense she had built. She realized, with a terrifying jolt, that she was already hopelessly attached. If he died, the war wouldn't matter anymore.
The air in the catacombs crackled, the ambient magic responding to the sudden, passionate tension flaring between them. Caelum shifted closer, his gaze dropping to her lips. Rhea didn't pull back. She leaned into his supernatural heat, her breath hitching.
Then, the stone walls violently trembled.
