Chapter 4
Victory

They turned to face the commander perfectly in sync.
The massive demon roared, charging forward with a massive battleaxe raised high. Shadows swarmed into the room ahead of him.
"Now!" Rhea shouted.
She thrust both hands forward. She didn't summon a weapon; instead, she channeled every ounce of her radiant healing magic and inverted it into a blinding, concussive wave of pure, holy light. The blast hit the swarming shadows, instantly purifying them into nothingness and blinding the commander.
Using her light as a smokescreen, Caelum vaulted forward. He summoned a weapon of pure, concentrated hellfire—a wicked, jagged broadsword. While the commander thrashed in the blinding light, Caelum spun, driving the flaming blade straight through the gaps in the commander's dark armor.
The demonic commander let out a world-shaking scream before collapsing into a mound of smoldering ash, his life force entirely extinguished.
Silence rushed back into the ruined sanctuary, broken only by the sound of their heavy breathing.
Caelum dropped his sword, letting it dissipate into the air, and clutched his bleeding side, leaning heavily against a stone pillar. He looked exhausted, battered, and utterly magnificent.
Rhea walked over to him. The adrenaline was fading, but the warmth in her chest remained, steady and undeniable. She placed a glowing hand back over his wound, the soft light closing the laceration completely this time.
"You missed a spot," Caelum murmured, his voice a low, gravelly purr as he looked down at her.
"Oh, really?" Rhea arched an eyebrow, looking up at him through her lashes.
"Yeah." He reached out, gently cupping her chin. "I think my ego is bruised. You completely stole the show back there."
Rhea finally let out a genuine, unrestrained laugh. It felt foreign and wonderful in the damp catacombs. "You'll survive, demon."
"I will," Caelum agreed softly, his thumb tracing the line of her jaw. "So. About that dinner. When this war is over... are you going to let me take you somewhere that doesn't smell like sulfur and old bandages?"
Rhea looked at the man who had torn down her walls, recognizing that the battle outside was far from over, but the war inside her heart had finally been won.
"The very second this war is over," Rhea promised, pulling him down for another kiss, "it's a date."
