The Boarded Door

It happened on a rainy Thursday afternoon. Kaelen’s presence was weak during the day; he often vanished entirely, claiming he needed to "rest his projection." Maeve took the opportunity to finally investigate the cellars.
She descended the narrow, stone steps with a heavy-duty flashlight and a crowbar. The air grew damp, smelling of ancient earth and something metallic, like copper wire left in the rain.
At the end of a long, vaulted corridor, she found it. A massive, iron-bound oak door. It was covered in thick, wooden planks, nailed shut with heavy iron spikes. But what caught Maeve’s eye were the carvings. The wood surrounding the frame was etched with intricate, ancient runes. They weren't decorative. They were bindings.
Maeve set her jaw. She hated secrets. She hated being kept in the dark.
She wedged the crowbar beneath the first plank and pulled with all her strength. The wood groaned in protest.
The temperature in the corridor instantly plummeted to sub-zero. The flashlight flickered violently.
*“Maeve, stop!”* Kaelen’s voice echoed in the tight space, frantic and terrifying. He materialized right in front of the door, his form dense and furious. *“You do not know what you are doing! Step away from that door immediately!”*
"No," Maeve said stubbornly, her grip tightening on the crowbar. "You're lying to me, Kaelen. The house is safe. The wards are strong. But the center of the cold... it comes from behind this door. What are you hiding?"
*“I am protecting you!”* he roared, stepping toward her, trying to physically intimidate her backward. *“If you break that seal, you doom yourself. You doom this entire town. Walk away!”*
The old Maeve, the mean, prickly woman, would have yelled back. But the new Maeve, the woman who had spent the last week falling in love with him, saw the truth in his glowing eyes. It wasn't anger. It was sheer, desperate panic.
"I'm not leaving you down here," she said quietly, her voice echoing off the stone walls. "Whatever it is, we face it together."
Before he could protest, she threw her weight against the crowbar. With a loud, splintering crack, the ancient wood gave way. The heavy iron nails tore free from the frame.
The moment the seal was broken, the runes around the door flared with a sickly, necrotic purple light. A wave of heavy, suffocating air blew out from the cracks, smelling of ozone and death.
Kaelen let out a sound of pure agony and fell to his knees, clutching his chest. His translucent form flickered wildly, distorting like static on a broken television screen.
"Kaelen!" Maeve dropped the crowbar and reached for him, but her hands passed right through his flickering shoulders. "What's happening?"
*“The anchor...”* he gasped, looking up at her with a mixture of terror and sorrow. *“You broke the seal. The anchor is exposed.”*
Determined to understand, Maeve pushed past his kneeling form and shoved her shoulder against the heavy oak door. It swung inward with a protesting groan, revealing a space that defied the architecture of the house.
