Chapter 7

The Breach

They poured out of the portal like a swarm of locusts, a tidal wave of shrieking, freezing darkness.
Kaelen’s physical body on the dais convulsed, a scream tearing from his real, human throat as the portal violently drained more of his life force to widen the gap.
His astral projection instantly reacted. Glowing with blinding kinetic energy, the spirit-Kaelen summoned his broadsword and threw himself between Maeve and the swarming horde. He was a whirlwind of light and destruction, cleaving through the darkness, incinerating dozens of wraiths with every swing.
"Run, Maeve!" the physical Kaelen gasped from the dais, his voice raw and raspy. He strained against the iron chains, his eyes fixed on her. "Get out of the house!"
Maeve stood frozen, the chaos exploding around her. The dark moment had arrived. All hope was lost. The swarm was too massive. Kaelen’s astral form was brilliant, but he was being overwhelmed, pushed back toward the event horizon.
And on the dais, the horrifying truth became apparent. The sudden surge in the portal's power was accelerating Kaelen's physical deterioration. Starting at his fingertips, his flesh was beginning to turn gray, flaking away into ash.
He was dying, right in front of her.
Maeve’s entire worldview collapsed inward. For thirty-two years, she had lived by a single rule: protect yourself. Stay single. Stay mean. Don't let anyone close enough to hurt you. If she ran right now, she could escape. The portal would consume Kaelen, the wraiths would spread, but she might buy herself enough time to drive away. She could survive.
But as she looked at Kaelen—the man who had thrown furniture at her, who had saved her in the parking lot, who had sat with her in the dust while she restored broken things—she realized survival was entirely worthless without him. Her safe, isolated life was a prison.
She was Maeve. She restored ruined things.
Abandoning every instinct of self-preservation she possessed, Maeve sprinted directly into the fray.
She ducked under the swipe of a shadow-wraith, feeling the unnatural cold burn the skin of her cheek, and scrambled up onto the stone dais.
"What are you doing?!" physical Kaelen choked out, his arms trembling violently against the chains. "You will be consumed!"
"Shut up, General," Maeve snarled, dropping to her knees beside his chained right wrist. "I don't take orders from you."
She ignored the terrifying battle raging just feet away. She ignored the deafening roar of the portal. She focused entirely on the heavy iron cuff binding his wrist. It wasn't a standard lock. It was secured by a complex, interlocking cipher of ancient runes.
Maeve leaned in, her eyes scanning the geometric shapes, her mind racing. She was a master of antiques. She had spent her life studying historical craftsmanship, dead languages, and the mechanics of ancient locking mechanisms.
"These aren't Vanguard runes," she muttered, tracing the lines with her finger, wincing as the heat of the iron blistered her skin. "They're Druidic binding symbols. They're based on elemental opposition."
"You cannot break them," Kaelen groaned, his breathing ragged. His fingers were entirely ash now. "They require magic. You are human."
"Watch me," she growled.
