Chapter 3

The Artifact and the Unknown

"Aww," a tiny voice cooed.
Aurelia and Jace turned to see Pip hovering near the ceiling, her hands clasped under her chin. Her blue light was warm and steady now. "You aren't boring anymore. You're sweet."
The little ghost gracefully somersaulted through the zero-gravity environment, diving toward a massive, iron-bound ancestral chest that was currently drifting near the center of the room. Pip phased her translucent hands straight through the solid wood and heavy iron locks. She rummaged around inside, muttering to herself, before pulling her hands out.
Clutched in her ghostly palms was a physical object—a fist-sized, crystalline sphere that glowed with a fierce, pulsating golden light.
"What is that?" Jace demanded, his protective instincts overriding his awkwardness as he grabbed Aurelia's arm and gently pulled her behind him.
"It’s a Chronosphere," Pip said proudly. "I died hiding it from the bad men a very long time ago. It shows what could be."
Before Jace could order her to put it down, Pip blew a breath of cold blue air onto the crystal. The golden light exploded outward, filling the center of the dark, floating room with a swirling, fragmented hologram.
It wasn't a recording. It was a window.
In the golden light, Aurelia saw an older version of Jace. His hair was peppered with gray, and he was out of his uniform, wearing comfortable, casual clothes. Beside him stood an older Aurelia, her hair loose, laughing at something he had just said. In the vision, Jace reached out and took Aurelia's hand, his thumb stroking her knuckles with a profound, quiet familiarity. The love between them in the projection was palpable, radiating a deep, unshakable warmth.
Aurelia felt a lump form in her throat. A genuine, happy future. It was something she hadn't dared to hope for.
But the ancient crystal began to emit a high-pitched, dangerous whine. The golden light flickered frantically, turning a harsh, blinding white. The air in the room grew instantly, oppressively hot.
"It's overloading!" Jace yelled over the escalating whine. "The containment matrix is degrading!"
Pip dropped the crystal in panic, letting it float in the center of the room. "I'm sorry! I don't know how to turn it off!"
"We have to force it back into the stasis lining of the chest!" Jace grabbed the heavy, iron-bound lid of the floating trunk, struggling to push it against the zero-gravity resistance. "Aurelia, help me!"
Aurelia didn't hesitate. She grabbed the edge of the heavy wood, planting her feet against the nearest floating wall to gain leverage. Jace reached out, grabbing the searing hot crystal and throwing it into the chest.
"Push!" Jace commanded.
Together, their hands overlapping on the rough iron, they threw their combined weight against the lid. The crystal fought back, a surge of kinetic energy pushing against the wood. Aurelia gritted her teeth, her muscles straining alongside Jace's.
With a loud *clang*, the iron latch snapped shut. The blinding light was instantly snuffed out.
"Good job!" Pip cheered. The little ghost beamed at them, but her edges were already beginning to blur. "I think... I think I'm sleepy now."
With a final, musical giggle, Princess Pip dissipated into a shower of harmless, glittering blue sparks that faded into nothing before they hit the floor.
Instantly, the emergency protocols rebooted. The smart-hub beeped merrily. The neon city lights outside bled back into the room as the blast doors slid open. And with a heavy thud, the gravity plating re-engaged.
Jace and Aurelia dropped to the floor, landing unceremoniously on the plush rug amidst a rain of falling antique cushions and a single silver teacup.
The room was completely silent, save for the hum of the city far below.
Jace pushed himself up into a sitting position, rubbing his forehead. He looked at the heavy wooden chest, then turned his gaze to Aurelia. Her immaculate hair was a mess, and her silk dress was rumpled, but her eyes were bright and alive.
The holographic vision of the future was gone. They were just two strangers sitting on the floor of a penthouse, surrounded by ancient wood and glowing technology. There was no guarantee that the beautiful, loving future the Chronosphere had shown them would come to pass. A vision was just a possibility, a path that required work, patience, and courage to walk down.
Jace slowly extended his hand toward her, mirroring the exact gesture from the golden hologram. He didn't say a word, but his dark eyes were full of a silent, terrifying, hopeful question.
Aurelia looked at his steady hand. She didn't know if they would ever truly fall in love. She didn't know what the future held in this strange, metallic city. But as she lifted her arm and placed her hand firmly in his, feeling the rough calluses of his palm, she knew she was no longer afraid of the unknown.
She held on tight, ready to find out.
