The Reveal

"That is quite enough," Maeve’s voice echoed.
It wasn't a shout, but the words cut through the deafening roar of the rain, the thunder, and the clanking armor with absolute, terrifying clarity.
Rowan tried to push her back, but the gentle hand on his armored shoulder felt suddenly immovable, as if she were anchored to the very center of the earth. She stepped out from behind him, her wet dress dragging in the mud.
"Maeve, no!" Rowan panicked, reaching for her.
"Rest, my brave knight," she whispered, giving him a brief, breathtaking smile over her shoulder. "You have played the protector long enough."
Maeve turned to face the Grand Inquisitor. She didn't drop to her knees. She didn't weep. She simply raised her chin.
The transformation was instantaneous and terrifying. The innocent, earthy brown of her eyes vanished, replaced by a blinding, incandescent silver light that illuminated the muddy square like a fallen star. The air pressure in the village plummeted, creating a sudden, suffocating vacuum. The raindrops suspended in mid-air, frozen around her.
"Witchcraft!" the Inquisitor shrieked, his horse rearing up in sudden terror. "Strike her down! Now!"
Five knights lunged forward, their heavy swords swinging toward Maeve’s unprotected neck.
Maeve didn't flinch. She didn't even speak an incantation. She simply let out a long, tired sigh and raised one hand.
A shockwave of pure, rippling kinetic energy exploded from her palm. The five charging knights were hit by an invisible wall of force that shattered their breastplates and threw them backward through the air like discarded dolls. They crashed into the wooden walls of the surrounding houses, completely incapacitated.
Rowan dropped to one knee, staring in absolute, paralyzed awe. The woman he had spent his life trying to protect was practically vibrating with an ancient, catastrophic power.
"I sought only to live in peace," Maeve’s voice resonated, no longer sounding like the village healer, but like a legion of ancient, forgotten gods speaking in unison. "But you have brought steel to my door, and you have threatened the only mortal heart I cherish."
She swept her arm upward.
The frozen rain suddenly vaporized into steam. From the muddy ground beneath the knights' feet, a localized hurricane of black, roaring fire erupted. It wasn't natural fire; it produced no heat, only a bone-chilling cold that instantly froze the blood in the knights' veins. The black flames curled around the vanguard like sentient serpents.
The steel swords grew so supernaturally cold that they shattered in the knights' hands like brittle glass. Armor buckled and warped. The men screamed, a chorus of absolute, mind-shattering terror, as the black fire devoured their weapons and scorched the ground beneath them without touching a single blade of grass or wooden roof nearby.
It was an absurdly, terrifyingly overpowered display of mastery. She wasn't just fighting them; she was casually unraveling the very fabric of their reality.
The Grand Inquisitor’s horse bolted, throwing the man into the mud. Terrified out of their minds, stripped of their weapons, and facing a creature of god-like wrath, the remaining knights broke line. They scrambled over each other, screaming and weeping in the dark, fleeing blindly into the torrential storm, abandoning their crusade and their commander.
