Chapter 5
The Blood Sacrifice
❧
"It is incredibly rude to snoop through another witch's basement, Sabrina."
The voice cut through the dark like a scalpel. Cold, pristine, and dripping with malicious superiority.
Blinding, surgical-white witch-light flooded the cellar. Miranda Thorne stood at the bottom of the wooden stairs. She had dropped the facade of the grieving widow. Her posture was relaxed, a predator entirely comfortable in its lair. Her eyes, usually a calm, calculating blue, were completely pitch black—the unmistakable mark of demonic corruption.
Brie scrambled backward, placing herself between her mother and the tethered spirit of her father. She raised her hands, summoning her chaotic magic, ready to unleash a torrent of kinetic force.
Miranda simply raised one perfectly manicured finger.
An invisible, crushing weight slammed into Brie, driving her to her knees in the dirt. Her magic—her wild, rebellious blood-magic—was instantly suppressed, smothered under an avalanche of sheer, ancient power that didn't belong to a human witch.
"You are so delightfully predictable," Miranda sighed, stepping off the stairs and walking slowly around the perimeter of the summoning circle. "I knew the moment you arrived you would start digging. You always were a messy, suspicious child. Just like your father."
Miranda glanced dismissively at the spectral form of Thomas, who was cowering against the bedrock.
"He was a mundane fool," Miranda sneered. "He thought I was sleeping with another man. When he broke into this cellar and found me communing with the entity... he threatened to take you away. He threatened to expose my practices to the Coven Council. I couldn't allow a pedestrian like him to ruin the empire I built."
"You created a golem to fake his abandonment," Brie spat, fighting the invisible pressure pinning her down. "You made me hate him for fifteen years!"
"I gave you an origin story, Sabrina," Miranda countered smoothly. "Anger makes for potent magic. Look at you. You became a remarkably powerful blood-witch because you thought you were abandoned. You should be thanking me."
"You're sick," Brie snarled, spitting a wad of blood onto her mother’s pristine designer shoes. "You're breaking the most sacred laws of our kind. Siphoning power from a demon? You're a parasite."
Miranda smiled. It was a terrifying, hollow expression. "Power is power, darling. The suburban covens are weak. They play with crystals and herbs while I command the dark. But... maintaining this perfection," she gestured to her flawless face, "requires upkeep. The entity demands a significant blood sacrifice every fifteen years to renew the pact. Thomas served his purpose nicely."
Brie’s blood ran cold as her father's warning echoed in her mind. *The pact requires blood to renew.*
"The golem expired, timing it perfectly," Miranda continued, retrieving an obsidian ceremonial dagger from a hidden alcove in the wall. The blade hummed with a thirsty, necrotic energy. "And now, the entity requires a new offering. A witch's blood is so much sweeter than a mundane's. And honestly, Sabrina... you have always been a profound disappointment. A messy, rebellious stain on my perfect legacy."
Miranda stepped into the summoning circle, raising the obsidian dagger. The shadows in the corners of the room began to writhe and hiss, the demonic entity eager for its payment.
"It's time to be useful to your mother for once," Miranda whispered.
