Chapter 7
The Garden
❧
Three weeks later.
The sweltering August heat had finally broken, leaving Elm Creek Drive bathed in a comfortable, breezy afternoon light.
Maya knelt in the dirt of her backyard, wearing denim overalls, her hands buried in the rich, dark soil. She was planting hydrangeas. The air didn't hum with ultraviolet energy anymore. It just smelled like earth, cut grass, and impending rain. And for the first time in her life, Maya found that the mundane world was entirely enough.
The screen door banged open.
Silas walked out onto the patio. He was wearing faded jeans and a slightly wrinkled t-shirt that belonged to Maya. He was holding two glasses of lemonade. He looked messy. He looked human. He looked devastatingly handsome.
"I have concluded that physical labor is a highly inefficient way to procure flora," Silas noted, walking over and handing her a glass. "However, the biological endorphin release is... acceptable."
Maya laughed, wiping a smudge of dirt from her forehead with the back of her wrist. "You're getting the hang of it, Weaver."
Silas knelt beside her in the dirt, heedless of his jeans. He reached out, his warm, completely human fingers tangling with hers.
"I do miss the nebula sometimes," Silas admitted softly, looking up at the clear blue Ohio sky. "But only the aesthetic."
"And what do you prefer now?" Maya asked, leaning her head against his shoulder.
Silas looked down at her. He saw the chaotic, vibrant, messy human who had torn a hole in the universe just to yell at the gods for him. He saw his karmic anchor. He saw his destiny, no longer mandated by law, but chosen freely by his own heart.
"This," Silas whispered, leaning in to press a soft, lingering kiss to her lips. "This is absolute perfection."
The universe, watching quietly from the stars above, couldn't help but agree.
