Chapter 5

Requited and Redeemed

The rustle of shifting leaves broke the quiet.
A shadow fell over Maeve. She didn't look up, too consumed by her absolute humiliation and despair.
Then, a hand—trembling, burning with fever, but infinitely gentle—touched her face.
Maeve gasped, freezing.
Bastian had dragged himself across the moss. He was kneeling in the dirt in front of her, struggling to keep himself upright. His breathing was labored, his face a terrifying canvas of black, necrotic veins, but his violet eyes had cleared. They were fixed entirely on her, burning with an emotion so intense, so staggering, that it stopped the breath in Maeve’s lungs.
He didn't touch the smooth, unblemished side of her face. He reached up, his long, elegant fingers gently, reverently cupping the ruined, heavily scarred flesh of her left cheek.
"Look at me," Bastian whispered, his voice incredibly weak, yet vibrating with absolute authority.
Maeve slowly lowered her hands. She looked up into the eyes of the immortal lord she loved.
"You foolish, beautiful, brilliant woman," Bastian breathed, a tear of blood slipping from his eye to track down his ashen cheek. "Do you truly believe I refused you because of your scars?"
Maeve let out a pathetic, trembling breath. "Why else..."
"Because I love you," Bastian confessed, the words falling from his lips like a prayer he had held inside for centuries.
Maeve’s heart stalled in her chest. The crimson light of the atrium seemed to flare.
"I have loved you since the day you first walked into my archives, limping and defiant, determined to learn the history of a world that had been so unimaginably cruel to you," Bastian continued, his thumb gently stroking the raised, puckered tissue of her burn scars. He looked at the scars not with disgust, but with profound awe. "To me, you are not broken, Maeve. These scars are the battleground where you fought death and won. They are the map of your survival. You possess a strength of soul that makes every immortal in that Conclave look hollow and pathetic."
He leaned his forehead against hers, his skin burning against her cool flesh.
"I kept my distance," he admitted, his voice cracking with agony, "because I am a monster, Maeve. I am a creature of the dark, sustained by blood and violence. You are a creature of light. I refused to drag you into my shadows. And tonight, when you offered me your throat... I refused because I would rather die a thousand agonizing deaths than risk my starvation making me feral. I would rather die than risk draining the only woman I have ever truly loved, or cursing her to become a blood-slave."
Maeve stared at him, the entire foundation of her reality shifting, restructuring itself in a matter of seconds.
He didn't pity her. He didn't find her ugly.
Her love was not unrequited.
A fierce, protective, and overwhelmingly powerful warmth erupted in Maeve’s chest. The insecurity, the years of hiding, burned away entirely in the fire of his confession.
She reached up, wrapping both of her hands around the back of his neck, her fingers tangling in his dark hair.
"I am not afraid of the dark, Bastian," Maeve said, her voice dropping all traces of frailty, ringing with absolute, unshakable conviction. "And I am not fragile. You are not going to die. I demand that you live for me."
She tilted her head to the side, pressing his face into the curve of her neck.
"Drink," she ordered. "That is an archivist’s command."
Bastian let out a ragged, desperate groan. The restraint he had practiced for years finally shattered. He opened his mouth, his fangs fully descending, and sank them deeply into the soft, pulsing flesh of her throat.
Maeve gasped, her back arching, her hands gripping his shoulders tight.
There was a brief, sharp flare of pain, but it was instantly swallowed by a wave of profound, euphoric warmth. As Bastian drank, Maeve didn't pull away. She leaned into him, pouring every ounce of her devotion, her gratitude, and her absolute, unconditional love into the blood that flowed into his mouth.
It was a magical, visceral connection. Through the bite, Maeve felt the cold, rotting darkness of the poison within him. She felt his pain. And she pushed back against it with the sheer, undeniable force of her living, beating heart.
The reaction was almost immediate.
Bastian’s burning fever began to break. The horrific, black necrotic veins crawling up his neck stopped their advance. Slowly, visibly, they began to recede, dissolving back into his skin as the purity of her devoted blood flushed the alchemical poison from his system.
He drank deeply, greedily, but he did not lose control. He took exactly what he needed to survive, and not a drop more.
Bastian pulled back, his fangs withdrawing smoothly from her flesh. He gasped for air, his alabaster skin returning to its flawless, pale perfection. The blackness was gone entirely.
He caught Maeve as she sagged slightly against him, dizzy from the blood loss but smiling brilliantly. He laid her gently back onto the moss, hovering over her.
He brought his thumb to her neck, gently wiping a single drop of stray blood from the puncture wounds. As he did, his vampire saliva sealed the injury, leaving only two faint, pink scars.
Bastian looked down at the woman lying in the dirt of the greenhouse, her emerald dress ruined, her beautiful, scarred face illuminated by the crimson light.
"You saved me," Bastian whispered, bowing his head in absolute reverence.
"You saved me first," Maeve replied softly, reaching up to trace the line of his jaw.
