Chapter 4

The Syndicate's Shadow

The revelation fundamentally altered Silas. The manic, unpredictable vampire was replaced by a creature of cold, lethal clarity. He paced the ruined studio, issuing rapid orders into a heavily encrypted phone.
"The rogue smelled him," Silas said, turning to Harper, who was pressing an ice pack to her head. "That means the scent of his blood is maturing. We cannot stay here. If a rogue smelled him, the Syndicate will not be far behind."
"The Syndicate?" Harper asked, pulling Leo onto her lap, wrapping him tightly in her arms.
"The ruling council of the region," Silas explained, his jaw tight. "They despise anomalies. A half-vampire child is a threat to the secrecy of our kind. They will view him as an abomination. And they will view you as a breach of protocol."
"They'll kill us," Harper whispered, her blood running cold.
"They will have to pry you from my cold, dead hands," Silas vowed, kneeling before her, pressing his forehead against her knee. "I will move you to the Crimson Manor. It is heavily warded. We will leave tonight."
But the Syndicate was faster than Silas anticipated.
An hour later, as Silas was packing Harper's paintings—refusing to leave a single brushstroke behind—a heavy, suffocating magical pressure descended upon the apartment building. The air grew impossibly thick. The temperature plummeted to freezing.
"Blood magic," Silas snarled, his fangs dropping. "They have cordoned the building. They are here."
"Silas," Harper panicked, gripping Leo tight.
"I cannot fight a full Syndicate strike team in this confined space without risking you," Silas said, his mind calculating rapidly. He grabbed Harper's shoulders, his silver eyes blazing with absolute authority. "Take the fire escape. Run through the woods toward the cliffs. Hide in the Abandoned Seawall Gallery. It is on neutral ground; their tracking magic will be blinded there. I will hold them off and meet you."
"I can't leave you!" Harper cried.
"You must protect our son!" Silas roared, the ferocity in his voice leaving no room for argument. He kissed her, fierce and hard, a promise of violence and devotion. "Run, my masterpiece. Now!"
Harper didn't hesitate. She threw open the window, clutching Leo to her chest, and scrambled down the rusting iron fire escape just as the heavy titanium door of the apartment began to glow red-hot from the Syndicate's breaching magic.
She ran. She ran through the dense, foggy Oregon woods, the damp branches tearing at her clothes, her lungs burning. She was just a plain, ordinary woman, but the terror of losing her child propelled her forward with superhuman endurance.
She broke through the treeline, the crashing roar of the Pacific Ocean filling her ears.
Perched precariously on the edge of a jagged, rocky cliff was the Abandoned Seawall Gallery. It was a rotting structure of glass and weathered wood, jutting out over the freezing, churning black water a hundred feet below.
Harper burst through the rotting wooden doors, retreating to the very back of the gallery, pressing herself and Leo against the massive, floor-to-ceiling glass wall that overlooked the deadly drop.
She waited in the terrifying dark, praying for Silas to walk through the door.
Twenty minutes later, the wooden doors were kicked open.
But it wasn't Silas.
A dozen vampires in sleek black tactical gear filed into the gallery. They were led by a tall, regal vampire with cold, dead eyes—Lord Alaric, the head of the regional Syndicate.
And dragged between two massive guards, bound tightly in glowing, heavy silver chains, was Silas.
