Chapter 3

Non-Euclidean Depths

The door opened with a slow, agonizing creak. The air that rushed up the stairwell hit Elias like a physical blow. It was freezing, wet, and smelled of centuries of decay.
He clicked on the flashlight. The beam cut through the absolute dark, illuminating the wooden stairs descending into the earth. But the stairs didn't end at a concrete floor.
Ten steps down, the staircase simply vanished into a pool of pitch-black water.
The basement was entirely flooded. The water was perfectly still, a viscous, ink-like substance that seemed to absorb the beam of Elias’s flashlight rather than reflect it. And yet, there was no sound of rushing water, no burst pipes. It was as if a piece of the midnight ocean had simply materialized beneath their home.
But the water was not the most horrifying thing in the cellar.
Painted along the stone foundation walls, just above the waterline, were symbols. They were scrawled in what looked unmistakably like thick, arterial blood. Elias stared at them, and a sharp pain spiked behind his eyes. The geometry of the shapes was impossible; lines that appeared to be parallel suddenly intersected, angles that looked obtuse felt painfully acute. Looking at them induced a sudden, violent wave of vertigo.

The chanting stopped.
Elias froze on the top step. The silence that followed was heavier than the chanting had been.
"I told you to stay awake with me."
Elias spun around. Silas stood in the kitchen doorway, blocking the only exit.
