Chapter 1
The Intrusion
❧
The rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows of Vance Tower, blurring the neon glow of the metropolis below into streaks of bleeding color. Seventy stories above the slick streets, the penthouse was a sprawling monument to hyper-modern opulence. Yet, to Harper Lane’s trained eye, the space felt subtly, nauseatingly wrong. The angles of the vaulted ceiling seemed to stretch a fraction further than geometry should allow, and the air was heavy, carrying the faint, freezing scent of the deep ocean.
Harper leaned heavily against the imported marble of the entryway, clutching her bleeding side. Her breath came in ragged gasps. In her other hand, she gripped a heavy, obsidian idol that pulsed with a faint, sickly warmth. She had just bypassed three state-of-the-art biometric locks, an armed security detail, and a localized hex ward to stand in this room. She was entirely out of options. She needed help, and she needed power.
At the far end of the vast office, standing before the storm-battered glass, was Julian Vance.
He was devastatingly handsome, a billionaire tech mogul whose face graced the covers of countless magazines. He wore a charcoal, perfectly tailored suit that accentuated his broad shoulders and lean, predatory frame. But Harper knew the truth. The Cult of the Deep, the fanatics currently hunting her through the city streets, worshipped ancient, sleeping gods. Julian Vance was not sleeping. And he was certainly not human.
Julian didn't turn around, but his voice, a rich, dark baritone that vibrated in Harper’s chest, filled the room. "The security on those elevators costs more than a small nation's gross domestic product, Miss Lane. I am both impressed and incredibly irritated."
"They're coming for me," Harper choked out, her knees trembling. The powerlessness that had haunted her for weeks threatened to swallow her whole. "The Cult of the Deep. I stole their artifact. I need your help, Vance."
Julian finally turned. His eyes, a striking, luminescent silver, locked onto hers. A slow, deeply amused smile spread across his lips, highlighting a jawline sharp enough to cut glass. He didn't look at the blood dripping onto his pristine floors. He looked at the fierce, desperate spark of defiance in her eyes.
"You break into my sanctum, dripping blood and holding a trinket of the drowning priests, and you demand my help?" he asked, stepping slowly across the room. The sheer magnetism of his presence made the air pressure drop. "You are either the bravest human in this city, Harper, or the most foolish."
"I have the idol," she said, holding it out slightly, though her arm shook. "I know what you are. I know you can stop them."
