Chapter 4
The True Face of Power
❧
Julian stepped in front of Harper, placing himself entirely between her and the weapons of the cultists.
He reached up and casually undid the button of his suit jacket. Then, the handsome, billionaire facade simply slipped away.
The ambient temperature in the room plummeted to sub-zero in a fraction of a second. Frost crawled across the remaining panes of glass and the marble floors. The city lights outside seemed to dim, swallowed by an unnatural, creeping darkness that bled from Julian’s silhouette.
Harper fell to her knees, gasping as the air was sucked from the room.
Julian’s tailored suit tore as his form expanded. The shadows stretching from his feet detached from the floor, rising up and solidifying into massive, writhing appendages. They were thick, muscular tentacles, shifting in color from deep obsidian to a bioluminescent, abyssal blue.
The cultists stopped chanting. Their rifles shook in their hands as the true weight of a cosmic entity manifested before them.
Julian turned his head slightly. Where his perfect, handsome face had been, there was now a shifting veil of non-Euclidean angles. His eyes were no longer silver; they were endless, terrifying voids of starry black space. Looking into them was like falling into the bottomless trench of the ocean.
The cult leader screamed in absolute, sanity-shattering terror and opened fire.
The bullets never reached Julian. They struck an invisible barrier of warped space and simply disintegrated into ash.
From Julian’s back, the shadowy tentacles lashed out with the crack of thunder. They didn't just strike the assassins; they warped the reality around them. One tentacle wrapped around a cultist and pulled him into a localized fold in space, the man vanishing with a wet pop. Another tentacle slammed into the floor, sending a shockwave of abyssal energy that turned two of the attackers to salt.
It was a massacre orchestrated with terrifying, elegant ease. Julian wielded his eldritch power like a maestro conducting a symphony of destruction. Within thirty seconds, the screaming stopped. The six assassins were simply gone, unmade by the wrath of a god they had foolishly thought they understood.
