Chapter 5
The Tainted Water
❧
The ascent was agonizing. Elara’s muscles burned, and her mind felt bruised and fragile, but she did not stop until she dragged Rowan through the heavy iron door of the sub-basement. She slammed the door shut, throwing the massive rusted deadbolt into place, sealing the flooded archives beneath them.
Back in their cramped cell, the silence of the monastery was a stark, jarring contrast to the roaring horrors of the vault. Elara stripped Rowan of his soaked, freezing robes, wrapping him in every dry blanket they owned. His hands were covered in raw, angry blisters where he had gripped the grimoire, and she carefully bound them with strips of clean linen.
He was breathing steadily now, the feverish heat gone from his skin, replaced by an exhausted, human pallor. He was asleep, safe for the moment from the overseers and the abyss alike.
Elara’s own hands were trembling violently. She felt filthy, her skin caked with salt and the psychic residue of the sunken city. She walked to the small clay washbasin in the corner of their cell. She picked up the wooden pitcher and poured the clean, clear well water over her hands.
As the water ran over her skin and pooled in the basin, it began to change.
Elara watched, paralyzed, as the clear water darkened. It deepened from grey to a profound, oily black. The faint, unmistakable scent of rotting kelp and cold ozone drifted up from the clay bowl.
On his cot, Rowan shifted in his sleep. His lips parted, and he murmured a single, jagged syllable.
It was a sound that no human throat was designed to produce, a fragment of the language of the deep.
Elara stood frozen in the dim light of the cell. She stared at the abyssal black water swirling in the basin. A cold, terrifying realization settled over her like a heavy shroud. As the jagged syllable hung in the quiet air of the room, Elara realized, with absolute, horrifying clarity, that she understood exactly what the word meant.
