Chapter 3

The Midpoint Shift

The Obsidian Bureau was a towering skyscraper of black glass and endless cubicles, exactly the kind of place Chloe had hoped to escape in death. Silas had dragged her to his office on the 42nd floor to review the patrol reports.
Silas paced in front of a glowing map of the city, rubbing his temples. Chloe was draped sideways across his leather visitor's chair, her legs dangling over the armrest, playing a mindless tapping game on a phantom smartphone she had manifested.
"The rift isn't just leaking chaos," Silas muttered, staring at the map. The red blotches representing demonic activity were clustering in a very specific pattern. "It's a feeding ground. And it's getting stronger."
"Mhm," Chloe said, not looking up.
Silas slammed a hand on his desk, making her jump. "Pay attention, Chloe! This isn't a joke. The modern dead are entering the Sub-Ethereal Plane with unprecedented levels of stress. The rift is absorbing that residual anxiety. And..." He hesitated, looking at her glowing chest, where the Maiden's mark pulsed faintly beneath her shirt.
"And what, Silas?" Chloe asked, dropping the phone.
"And it's being directed by a Chaos Demon. A high-tier entity from the deeper abyss. I've been tracking its movements. It's not randomly feeding. It's hunting."
"Hunting what?"
"A power source massive enough to tear the rift open permanently," Silas said, his ice-blue eyes locking onto hers. "It's hunting you, Chloe. Your soul is the ultimate battery. Your profound apathy is the exact inverse of its frantic, chaotic energy. If it consumes the Maiden, it will possess the power to shatter the plane."
Chloe sat up slowly. The comforting blanket of her usual indifference thinned, replaced by a cold spike of genuine dread. "So, you're telling me that even in the afterlife, I am being actively headhunted by a toxic upper-management type who wants to drain my soul for profit?"
Silas blinked. "That is an incredibly reductive way to phrase it, but... yes."
"I hate it here."
Suddenly, the lights in Silas's office flickered. The ambient hum of the building died. The temperature plummeted so fast frost immediately coated the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Silas drew his cane, his posture instantly shifting into a combat stance. "Get behind me."
The reinforced oak door of the office didn't open; it disintegrated into ash.
Stepping through the ruined doorway was a creature made of jagged shadows and frantic, vibrating energy. It possessed too many limbs, all twitching with nervous, aggressive speed. It had no face, only a gaping maw radiating a blinding, strobe-light panic. It was the physical embodiment of a missed deadline, an overdrawn bank account, and a panic attack all rolled into one.
The Chaos Demon had found them.
