Chapter 5
The Flare

The silence that followed was deafening, broken only by the wail of the wind howling through the ruined penthouse.
Elara slowly stood up from behind the marble island. The luxurious apartment was utterly decimated. Furniture was splintered, the walls were scorched, and the floor was littered with glass.
In the center of the devastation stood Julian.
The massive output of magic had stripped away his glamour entirely. He was breathtaking, and he was terrifying. Tall, curved horns of polished obsidian swept back from his brow. Shadows clung to his shoulders like a living, breathing cloak, and his eyes were completely pupil-less pools of violet fire. He was a creature of myth, an apex predator of the occult world.
He stood frozen, his chest heaving, staring at her. He waited for her to scream. He waited for her to run from the monster he truly was.
Elara’s heart hammered against her ribs, fear warring with the deep, resonant hum of the silver tether tying them together. She stepped over a piece of shattered glass. Her legs shook, but she did not stop. She crossed the ruined room until she was standing directly in front of him.
Cautiously, she reached up. Her small, pale hand hesitated for a fraction of a second before coming to rest against his cold, sharp cheekbone.
Julian let out a ragged, shuddering breath, leaning into her touch as the violet fire in his eyes dimmed, revealing the desperate, exhausted man beneath the monstrous exterior.
"You're an absolute mess, Mr. Vesper," she whispered, her voice trembling but resolute.
Julian gave a weak, dark chuckle, his hands coming up to gently, reverently grip her waist. "You should have run, Elara."
"It's a little late for that," she replied, looking down at the silver thread that pulsed brightly between them, steady and unbreakable.
But as they stood in the ruins of his fortress, Elara looked out the shattered windows. The massive release of ancient magic they had just produced had lit up the astral plane like a distress flare. Far below, in the dark alleys and hidden sanctuaries of the city, the shadows were already beginning to shift. Every creature, warlock, and demon in Chicago now knew that Julian Vesper had found his fated mate, and that his power had been unleashed.
The immediate threat was banished, but as Julian pulled her firmly against his chest, shielding her from the cold wind, Elara knew the truth. She was no longer invisible. She was the tether keeping the most dangerous man in the city anchored, and the real war for their survival had only just begun.
