Chapter 3
The Alpha's Shadow
❧
Sera made it back to the Apex Penthouse by eighteen-hundred hours. She stripped off the heavy cloak, incinerated it in the waste-chute, and scrubbed herself in the sonic shower until her skin was raw, desperately trying to wash away the stench of the Sub-Levels.
She dressed in a sleek, state-approved evening gown of deep emerald silk, applying cosmetics to hide the dark circles under her eyes. When Jaxen arrived at nineteen-hundred hours exactly, the penthouse smelled of synthesized roast fowl and perfectly chilled wine.
Jaxen stepped out of the private elevator, his imposing frame casting a long shadow across the pristine floor. He had removed his armored plating, wearing only the crisp black slacks and a fitted tunic of his uniform. He looked exhausted. The lines around his eyes were drawn tight, a testament to the endless, brutal demands the Ministry placed upon its Enforcers.
But when he looked at Sera, the tension in his shoulders miraculously dissolved.
He crossed the room, pulling her into a deep, consuming kiss. His hands were large and warm against her waist, grounding her in a reality she was about to shatter. Sera closed her eyes, kissing him back with a desperate, frantic intensity, trying to pour every ounce of her unspoken love, her apologies, and her goodbyes into the contact.
When he finally pulled away, he looked down at her, his pale blue eyes searching hers. "You are trembling."
"I'm just... relieved you're home," Sera lied smoothly, though her heart felt like it was tearing in two.
They sat at the glass dining table. The city lights flickered below them like a bed of dying embers. Jaxen poured the wine, his movements precise and elegant despite his lethal conditioning.
"The security protocols for the Valentine Spire have been finalized," Jaxen said, his voice a low rumble. "The Ministry is on high alert. There have been whispers of dissident activity in the lower sectors. A smuggling ring moving unauthorized bio-matter."
Sera’s blood ran completely cold. She stared at her plate, her stomach twisting into a violent knot. *Unauthorized bio-matter.* He was talking about Corvus. He was talking about the port.
"Is it... a credible threat?" Sera asked, forcing her voice to remain level, taking a slow sip of her wine to hide the shaking of her hands.
"We are tracking a biometric anomaly," Jaxen replied, his gaze intense. "An unregistered signature bouncing through Sector 4. My legion will be conducting a sweep of the Sub-Levels tomorrow night to eradicate the source before the Gala begins."
Tomorrow night. The night of her extraction.
Panic, blind and suffocating, seized her throat. The extraction was compromised. Jaxen’s own men would be swarming the Sub-Levels while she was trying to move the stasis pods to the port. If they found Corvus, if they found the clinic, it would all be over.
Sera couldn't breathe. The walls of the penthouse felt like they were closing in, crushing her. She abruptly pushed her chair back, the legs scraping loudly against the floor.
"Sera?" Jaxen asked, instantly alert, his Alpha instincts flaring.
"I... I feel ill," she gasped, clutching her stomach. "The wine. I need to lie down."
She fled the dining room, retreating to the massive, sterile bathroom. She locked the door, sinking to the cold tile floor, gasping for air as a full-blown panic attack washed over her.
She was trapped. The smuggler was paid. The pods couldn't survive another week in Corvus's failing lab. She had to move them tomorrow, but Jaxen’s Enforcers would be waiting.
She sat on the floor for hours, her mind racing through a dozen impossible scenarios, until exhaustion finally claimed her.
When she woke, the penthouse was dark. The holoclock read 0300 hours.
The bed in the master suite was empty. Jaxen was gone.
Sera frowned, pushing herself off the floor. It was unlike him to leave in the middle of the night without waking her. She walked out into the main living area. The lights were off, save for the glow of the city filtering through the smart-glass.
Then, she saw it.
Resting on the pristine glass dining table, illuminated by the neon glow of Neo-Angeles, was her biometric scrambler.
The illegal device she had worn to the Sub-Levels. The device she had hidden at the bottom of her personal effects drawer.
Sera stopped breathing.
A shadow detached itself from the far corner of the room. Jaxen stepped into the ambient light. He was fully armored. The silver cybernetic plates on his neck were glowing with an ominous, faint blue light, indicating his combat stims were active. His face was a mask of absolute, terrifying fury, colder and harder than the glass walls surrounding them.
"Sector 4," Jaxen said, his voice devoid of all warmth, sounding exactly like the ruthless machine the State had built him to be. "An unregistered signature bouncing through the Sub-Levels. I authorized a deep-trace on the anomaly."
He slowly walked toward the table, picking up the scrambler. The metal creaked under the pressure of his grip.
"It wasn't a dissident," Jaxen continued, his pale eyes locking onto her with devastating intensity. "It was you. The woman whose sequence is supposed to be pure. The woman I was preparing to claim before the entire Ministry."
Sera backed away, her hands raised defensively. "Jaxen, please..."
"You forged your location logs. You acquired illegal tech," he stated, stepping closer, towering over her. "You have been descending into the rot of the city. Why?"
He didn't know about the babies. He only knew she had lied about her whereabouts. To an Alpha-Prime, deception was synonymous with treason.
"I can't tell you," Sera sobbed, the tears finally breaking free. "If I tell you, you'll have to execute me. Please, Jaxen. Just let me go."
Jaxen’s jaw clenched so hard the cybernetic plates whined. The conflict within him was visible, a violent war between the absolute programming of his Enforcer conditioning and the profound, illogical love he felt for the woman weeping before him.
He closed the distance between them in a single stride, grabbing her arms. His grip was entirely unbreakable, yet meticulously calibrated not to bruise her.
"You are my mate," Jaxen growled, the Alpha instinct bleeding through the cold Enforcer persona. "There are no secrets between us. Tell me what is in Sector 4, Sera. Tell me before I tear the entire Sub-Level apart block by block to find out myself."
She looked up into his eyes. She saw the betrayal, the anger, but beneath it all, she saw the desperate plea of a man who wanted a reason not to destroy her.
If she lied again, he would unleash his legion on the Sub-Levels. He would find Corvus. He would find the pods. And as a loyal Enforcer of the State, he would be forced to follow protocol. He would have to watch his own children be incinerated.
She couldn't let him do that. She had to break his heart to save his soul.
"You think I had a miscarriage," Sera whispered, her voice trembling, her eyes locked on his.
Jaxen froze. The mention of their lost child was a physical blow. The anger in his eyes faltered, replaced by a flash of raw, unhealed grief. "Do not speak of that."
"I didn't miscarry, Jaxen," she said, the words tumbling out in a rushed, desperate confession. "I forged the medical logs. I used a neural-scrambler on the drones. I didn't lose the baby."
Jaxen’s grip on her arms loosened, his brow furrowing in profound confusion. "What are you saying? You... you birthed a child? In secret? Where is it?"
"It wasn't one," Sera choked out, falling to her knees on the cold floor, unable to bear the weight of his gaze any longer. "It was three. Natural conception. Triplets, Jaxen. I have three babies hidden in a stasis clinic in Sector 4. They're anomalies. If the State finds them, they'll kill them. If they know you fathered them, they'll kill you too."
Silence. Absolute, deafening silence descended upon the penthouse.
Sera knelt on the floor, weeping into her hands, waiting for the inevitable. Waiting for him to draw his sidearm. Waiting for him to key his comms and summon State Security. She had confessed to the highest form of genetic treason possible in Neo-Angeles.
Minutes stretched into eternity.
Slowly, she heard the heavy clunk of armor shifting. Jaxen dropped to his knees in front of her.
Sera flinched, expecting a blow. Instead, large, calloused hands gently grasped her wrists, pulling her hands away from her tear-stained face.
Jaxen was staring at her. The cold, mechanical Enforcer was entirely gone. His pale blue eyes were wide, shining with a moisture that defied every psychological block the Ministry had ever installed in his brain. His chest heaved as he struggled to process the sheer magnitude of the revelation.
"Three?" he whispered, his voice cracking, thick with an emotion the State had told him didn't exist. "I have... children? Three of them?"
Sera nodded frantically, terrified of the awe in his voice. "They're beautiful, Jaxen. They look just like you. But I have to get them out. I paid a smuggler. The extraction is tomorrow night. I was going to leave... I was going to disappear so you wouldn't be implicated."
Jaxen stared at her, the reality of her sacrifice washing over him. She had borne the terror, the agonizing secret, and the heartbreak of leaving him, all to protect his life and the lives of their children.
The Alpha-Prime conditioning, decades of brutal State programming designed to prioritize the Ministry above all else, met the immovable force of a father’s primal instinct.
And the conditioning shattered.
Jaxen let out a ragged breath and pulled Sera fiercely into his chest. He wrapped his massive arms around her, burying his face in her neck. He held her as if she were the only tether keeping him anchored to the earth.
"You foolish, brave woman," Jaxen murmured fiercely against her skin. "You thought I would let you face this alone? You thought I would choose the State over my own blood?"
Sera sobbed, clutching his armor. "They'll kill you, Jaxen. You're an Alpha-Prime."
Jaxen pulled back, taking her face in his hands. The awe was gone, replaced by a terrifying, cold, and utterly lethal resolve. But this time, that lethality was not directed at the dissidents of Neo-Angeles. It was directed at the State itself.
"I am the Commander of the Seventh Legion," Jaxen stated, his eyes burning with a dark, violent fire. "I know every security blind spot, every patrol route, and every encryption code in this city. You will not sneak out on a toxic cargo skiff like a rat, Sera. We are leaving together."
