Chapter 4
The Aethel-Bond

Nova stared at him, her breath catching in her throat. "What?"
Valerius looked down at the blood seeping between her fingers on her injured arm. His expression twisted with profound guilt and a fierce, undeniable possessiveness.
"I have stayed away from you," Valerius confessed, his thumbs gently sweeping the tears from her cheeks, "because my restraint is a fragile, pathetic thing where you are concerned. You are so fiercely vibrant, so brilliant, and I am a creature of the dark. I feared my nature would destroy you. But watching them hurt you... knowing your lifespan is a fleeting candle..."
He shook his head, his silver eyes locked onto hers with absolute, unwavering certainty. "I cannot allow it. I will not lose you to time, or to the cruelty of this universe."
He stepped closer, carefully taking her injured arm in his hands. He did not succumb to the bloodlust. Instead, he pulled a pristine white silken handkerchief from his coat. With an agonizing tenderness that contradicted his lethal strength, he wiped away the crimson blood, cleaning the jagged cut left by the bulkhead.
"There is a ritual among my kind," Valerius murmured, his eyes never leaving hers as he pressed the cloth to her skin. "The *Aethel-Bond*. A localized venom exchange. It alters the cellular structure. It halts the aging process of lesser species, intertwining their life force with the Sanguinarian."
He paused, the weight of eternity hanging in the air between them.
"It would make you immortal, Nova. It would bind you to me, as my equal, for the rest of time. You would never be fragile again." He swallowed hard, his aristocratic composure cracking to reveal the terrifying depth of his affection. "If you would have me."
Immortality. A life beside the man she had loved from the shadows, forever. She wouldn't be a blink in time. She would be a permanent fixture in the cosmos, safe, cherished, and entirely unbroken.
"Yes," Nova breathed without a single second of hesitation. "Yes, Valerius. Please."
A breathtaking smile, rare and devastatingly beautiful, broke across Valerius’s face. He pulled her flush against his chest, wrapping her in the absolute safety of his embrace.
"Hold on to me, my starlight," he whispered.
He lowered his head. His lips brushed against the soft, pulsing skin of her neck, sending a cascade of electric shivers down her spine. Then, with infinite care, he sank his fangs into her vein.
It didn't hurt. Instead, a rush of pure, euphoric cold flooded Nova’s system, immediately followed by a wave of intoxicating, burning warmth. She gasped, her fingers tangling in his dark hair as the Aethel-Bond took hold. She felt the ancient, stardust magic of the Sanguinarian venom rewriting her DNA, erasing her human frailty, and weaving her soul inextricably with his.
When Valerius finally pulled away, his silver eyes were glowing with a triumphant, possessive love. Nova looked down at her arm. The deep laceration had already healed, leaving behind a faint, silvery scar that shimmered in the dim light of the corridor.
She wasn't just a human anymore. She was infinite.
Valerius pulled her into a sweeping, consuming kiss, sealing their eternal vow in the shadows of the Lower Sector. The bullying, the fear, and the ticking clock of her mortality were gone forever, replaced by an eternity wrapped in the arms of the most dangerous, and deeply devoted, being in the galaxy.
