Chapter 3
The Hydro-Spanner
❧
The illusion was shattered by the harsh shriek of tearing metal.
Clara jolted awake. The heavy blast doors of the brig were being forced apart by a pair of massive hydraulic jacks. Standing on the other side was a squad of elite ship security, led by Governor Thorne’s personal enforcer.
"There she is," the enforcer barked, stepping into the cell. His eyes swept over the scene—Clara in her ruined, grease-stained wedding dress, wearing a mechanic's coat, sitting next to the ship's lowest worker. Disgust curled his lip.
"The Governor is furious," the enforcer snapped, grabbing Clara by the arm and hauling her roughly to her feet. "The docking sequence has begun. You look like a gutter rat. Move."
"Let go of me!" Clara protested, trying to pull her arm away. But the conditioning of a lifetime of obedience paralyzed her. She was terrified.
Another guard stepped forward, his boot coming down hard on Finn’s synthesizer. The holographic Christmas tree vanished in a spray of real sparks, plunging the cell back into grim, cold reality. "Keep your garbage to yourself, grease-monkey," the guard sneered at Finn.
Finn had spent his entire life keeping his head down. He had taken the insults, the poor pay, and the mockery because he had nothing to fight for. But as he watched the enforcer drag Clara toward the door—watched the light die in her eyes as she was forced back into her cage—something inside him snapped.
Finn stood up. He didn't reach for a blaster. He reached into his toolbelt and pulled out a heavy, solid-steel hydro-spanner.
He stepped directly into the path of the enforcer, blocking the exit.
"Get out of the way, loser," the enforcer warned, resting a hand on his holster.
"Let her go," Finn said, his voice entirely devoid of fear. He gripped the heavy wrench, his jaw set in a hard line. "She said let her go."
"Finn, don't," Clara pleaded, tears springing to her eyes. "They'll throw you out the airlock."
"I don't care," Finn looked past the guards, locking eyes with Clara. "You said you didn't have a choice. You do. You don't have to be sold, Clara. You can walk away right now."
The enforcer drew his stun-baton, lunging forward. But Finn was faster, fueled by a lifetime of hard labor. He swung the hydro-spanner, catching the enforcer squarely in the chest and knocking him backward into the corridor.
The cell erupted into chaos.
