Chapter 3
The Ultimatum
❧
Lyra stared into his obsidian eyes, her mind racing. He was the most powerful man in the universe. He had an armada at his back. Why did he personally fly to the edge of the galaxy to pull her out of a docking bay?
"Winning the ballot isn't winning the war," Thorne said, answering her unspoken question. He reached up, his knuckles lightly, tauntingly grazing the curve of her jaw. Lyra flinched, but she refused to look away. "My presidency is facing a slight... complication. Massive, violent rebellions across the core systems. General strikes. The military is stretched thin."
"Good," Lyra breathed, a fierce spark of defiance lighting in her chest. "They see you for what you are."
"They see me as a dictator," Thorne agreed, entirely unbothered by the word. "Because I lack one essential component. Moral legitimacy. The kind of annoying, sanctimonious legitimacy that you possess in spades."
He leaned in closer, dropping his voice to a conspiratorial, devastating whisper. "I don't just want to defeat you, Lyra. Defeating you is boring. I want to own you. I want you to come back to the capital. I want you to stand at my right hand, swear fealty to my administration, and accept the position of Vice President of the Coalition. A 'unified' government."
Lyra let out a breathless, incredulous laugh. "You're insane. I would rather die. I will never legitimize your regime."
"I knew you'd say that," Thorne smiled, the expression cold and entirely devoid of mercy. "But your idealism is a remarkably predictable weapon. If you refuse my generous offer, Lyra, I will issue an executive order to the Fifth Fleet. They are currently holding position above the border worlds—the very planets you sacrificed your career to protect."
Lyra’s breath hitched. The blood drained completely from her face.
"If you do not stand beside me," Thorne continued, his gaze dropping briefly to her lips before meeting her terrified eyes again, "I will authorize a full orbital-strike on those colonies. Millions will burn. And I will make sure the galaxy knows it was your stubborn pride that lit the match."
The trap snapped shut.
It was a masterclass in psychological torture. He knew she carried the guilt of their subjugation. He was twisting her greatest strength—her empathy—into a chain to bind her to him forever. He didn't just want her obedience; he wanted to corrupt her, to drag her down into the dark with him.
He moved in even closer, the physical proximity intoxicatingly arrogant. He was certain he had won. The toxic chemistry between them flared, a twisted blend of hatred, history, and the undeniable gravity of two equals colliding.
"Submit, Lyra," Thorne commanded softly, his breath brushing her skin. "Rule by my side. It’s the only way to save them. It's the only way you save yourself."
