Chapter 3

Illusions of Control

Weeks dissolved into a blur of corporate briefings, hostile takeovers, and assassination attempts.
Renna adapted with terrifying speed. The streets had taught her to recognize predators, and the Apex boardroom was just a different kind of alleyway. She was ruthless. When a rival cybernetics firm tried to undercut their supply lines, Renna didn't negotiate; she authorized a hostile buyout that bankrupted three executives and drove their competitor into the ground. When a poison-laced datapad was slipped into her quarters, Silas intercepted it, his neural-mate link flaring with her sudden spike of fear before his enhanced reflexes neutralized the threat.
Every attempt on her life only pulled her and Silas closer together.
Late at night, when the Spire was quiet and the surveillance drones cycled down for maintenance, the professional boundaries dissolved entirely. Their romance was a desperate, fierce collision. Through the neural-link, their intimacy was magnified a thousandfold. They didn't just share touch; they shared the raw, unfiltered essence of their souls. When Silas kissed her, Renna could feel the fierce, protective fire burning in his chest, echoing the possessive, hungry need in her own.
"We own this city now," Renna whispered one evening, lying bare against Silas’s chest, the synthetic sunlight of the penthouse fading into a simulated twilight. She traced the silver sub-dermal plating on his jaw. "The Board thought they could use me as a puppet. A slum-rat they could control. But I'm rewriting the executive codes. I'm taking the reins."
Silas tightened his arm around her, his golden optics glowing dimly in the dark. But the hum in the back of Renna’s skull picked up a note of hesitation. A spike of dread that belonged to him, not her.
"What is it?" she asked, sitting up slightly.
"The Board," Silas murmured, his synthetic voice heavy. "They are... too compliant. You have dismantled three of their subsidiary operations, and they have not retaliated. It contradicts their psychological profiles. It is too easy, Renna."
Renna frowned. Her street instincts, dulled by the luxury of the penthouse, suddenly flared to life. Silas was right. You didn't survive the slums without recognizing a trap, and she had been too blinded by her new power to see the snare closing around her.
"Marcus Vance," Renna said, speaking her genetic predecessor's name aloud. "The Board said he was assassinated by a rogue guard. But the official security logs are sealed behind Black-ICE encryption. Even I haven't been able to access them."
"If you attempt to breach the Black-ICE, the Board will be notified," Silas warned.
"I'm the Lead," Renna said, her eyes hardening with the ruthless resolve that had kept her alive in the Rust-Grid. "I have absolute administrative override. I'm going to find out exactly why they brought me up here."
