Chapter 6
The Founder Returns
❧
The upload complete chime echoed softly in the sub-zero vault.
The restraints hissed and released.
The body in the chair sat perfectly still for a long moment. Then, the eyes opened. The panic, the desperation, and the fierce independence of the street-scavenger were completely gone. The eyes were cold, calculating, and ancient.
Marcus Vance took a deep, shuddering breath, filling his new, flawless lungs with the freezing air. He lifted his delicate, unscarred hands, turning them over, admiring the youth and strength of the biological vessel his corporation had spent decades perfecting.
He smiled. A slow, terrifying smirk that looked entirely wrong on Renna’s face.
He stood up, brushing invisible dust from his torn clothing. He turned to the towering, cybernetic Praetorian standing beside the chair.
"Status report, Alpha," Vance commanded, his voice carrying the arrogant authority of a god who had conquered death.
In the corporate mainframe, a secondary protocol executed. The Board wiped Silas's memory banks of the last three months. The romance, the rebellion, the agonizing pain of his override—it was all scrubbed clean. Only the foundational biological mate-bond remained, ensuring his absolute, unwavering protection of the body standing before him.
The bloody tears dried on Silas's face. His optics flickered, returning to their pale gold.
"Systems optimal, Lead," Silas responded, his voice smooth and synthetic. He bowed his head perfectly, a hollow, loyal machine once again. "The Spire is secure. Shall I escort you to the penthouse?"
Marcus Vance, wearing the beautiful, stolen face of the girl from the Rust-Grid, adjusted his collar. He felt the dull, loyal hum of the neural-mate protocol humming in the back of his mind. A perfect leash for a perfect guard.
"Yes, Silas," the monster smiled. "Take me home."
Silas turned, his heavy boots echoing on the freezing floor, and dutifully escorted the ghost wearing his true mate's body back up into the gilded light.
