Chapter 2

The Ghost's Rig

Elara dragged him into the back room, a windowless bunker that served as her living quarters and Jax’s old slicing den. She hoisted Kael onto the metal examination table, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs.
"This is going to hurt," she warned, grabbing a localized EMP-scalpel and a cauterizing torch.
"Just do it," Kael groaned, his jaw clenched so tightly the sub-dermal plating on his neck strained.
She cut away the ruined carbon fiber, exposing the fused, sparking neuro-links connecting his cybernetic arm to his biological nervous system. The damage was severe. The plasma had melted the pain-inhibitors. Every cut she made sent shockwaves of agony through his system, but Kael didn't scream. He just stared at the ceiling, his breathing labored, trusting her implicitly.
It took two agonizing hours to stabilize the internal bleeding, bypass the fried optical nerves, and seal the synthetic arteries. By the time she finished, her hands were trembling, covered in a mixture of his red biological blood and black cyber-fluid.
Kael had passed out halfway through the procedure. Elara covered him with a thermal blanket, her eyes lingering on his face. In sleep, the rigid, emotionally stunted mercenary looked softer, stripped of the lethal tension he always carried.
She turned to Jax’s rig. It took up half the room—a massive array of cooling towers, haptic interfaces, and quantum processors. It was a slicer's dream.
She plugged the Aegis drive into the isolated port. Instantly, the screens flared with hostile red code.
* WARNING: AEGIS PROPRIETARY ENCRYPTION DETECTED. LETHAL COUNTERMEASURES ARMED.*
Elara’s stomach plummeted. This wasn't standard corporate ICE (Intrusion Countermeasures Electronics). This was Black-ICE. If she triggered a fail-safe, the drive would melt, and it would likely fry her neural-port in the process, reducing her brain to static.
She sat in Jax's chair. She pulled up his old brute-force algorithms, the aggressive, overwhelming code he used to smash through corporate firewalls. She ran the first sequence.
The Aegis firewall swallowed it instantly, adapting and hardening.
* ACCESS DENIED.*
"Come on," Elara whispered, biting her lip. She launched a heavier assault, mirroring her brother’s legendary style. The screens flashed a violent crimson. A localized surge of heat radiated from the drive.
* WARNING: PURGE IMMINENT.*
She panicked, violently severing the physical connection just before the drive could self-destruct.
Elara collapsed back into the chair, burying her face in her hands. She couldn't do it. She wasn't Jax. She was a fraud sitting in a dead man's seat, playing a game she didn't understand. The crippling insecurity wrapped around her throat, choking the air from her lungs.
