Brass and Glass

The Aetherium Hall was a masterpiece of Steampunk excess. Built into the highest spire of the floating city, the ballroom featured a vaulted ceiling of spun glass and wrought brass, allowing the attendees to look up into the swirling, starlit snow of the engineered storm. The room was dominated by a fifty-foot mechanical Christmas tree, its branches formed from oxidized copper pipes, dripping with thousands of glowing, aether-fueled glass orbs.
Elara felt entirely out of her depth, yet strangely invincible.
The midnight blue velvet dress Julian had procured fit her like a second skin, clinging to her curves before flaring out into a subtle, elegant sweep. She had scrubbed her skin raw, pinned her dark hair up with brass-filigree combs, and left the grease behind.
When she had descended the stairs of the workshop, Julian had physically stopped breathing for a full three seconds. He hadn't made a joke. He hadn't flirted. He had simply offered his arm and whispered, *“Perfect.”*
Now, surrounded by the glittering elite of Aetheria, his arm was firmly wrapped around her waist. Julian had shed his heavy leather coat, revealing a sharp, dark suit with a subtle charcoal pinstripe, a midnight-blue silk cravat at his throat that perfectly matched her dress.
"Stop glaring at the Duke of Oakhaven," Julian murmured, leaning down so his lips brushed the shell of her ear. "He's going to think you want to assassinate him."
"I might," Elara muttered, taking a sip from a crystal flute of champagne that tasted like spun sugar and starlight. "He just offered to buy my brother’s workshop for a tenth of its value. I should introduce his jaw to my knee."
Julian laughed, a genuine, warm sound that cut through the polite, artificial murmurs of the crowd. "Remind me never to negotiate a contract with you."
A heavy, orchestral waltz began to play, the music generated by a massive, steam-powered calliope at the far end of the hall. The gears of the dance floor shifted subtly, rotating the center of the room.
Julian smoothly plucked the champagne glass from her hand and set it on a passing silver tray. Without asking, he pulled her into the crowd.
"Julian, I don't—"
"Follow my lead, mechanic," he commanded gently.
His right hand settled on the small of her back, burning through the velvet of her dress. His left hand clasped hers, his fingers lacing through hers with an intimacy that made her breath hitch. They moved as the music swelled.
Elara had expected him to be clumsy, or perhaps overly flamboyant. Instead, Julian danced exactly how he flew: with total, predatory control. He spun her, guided her, and held her close. The distance between the 'brother’s best friend' and the woman he was holding vanished in the space of a single measure.
"You're staring, Elara," he teased, his eyes locking onto hers.
"You're surprisingly light on your feet for a man who wears steel-toed boots," she shot back, struggling to keep her voice even.
The banter was their armor. It was how they had communicated for years. But tonight, the armor was cracking.
Julian pulled her an inch closer, pulling her flush against his chest. "I have a lot of hidden talents."
"Modesty clearly isn't one of them."
"If I were modest, I wouldn't have had the courage to ask you tonight." His smile faded slightly, a shadow passing over his bright eyes. "I've wanted to do this for three years, El."
Elara’s heart skipped a beat. "Do what? Drag me to a party filled with Syndicate snobs?"
"Hold you," Julian said softly. The words were quiet, meant only for her amidst the sweeping waltz. "Look at you. Have you look at me without wanting to throw a hydro-spanner at my head."
She swallowed hard. The teasing was gone. The raw, unfiltered intensity in his gaze was terrifying. "Julian..."
"Come with me," he said abruptly, stopping in the middle of the dance floor. He grabbed her hand, his grip tight, almost desperate. "I need to talk to you. Out of here."
