Chapter 4
The Blueprint Revelation
❧
It was the morning of Valentine’s Eve when the illusion shattered.
Gideon had gone to the upper levels of the manor to retrieve a specific thermal-regulator. Livia was at his main desk, searching for a pen to update the pups' medical charts.
She opened the top drawer. Inside was a chaotic mess of schematics and blueprints. She shifted a heavy roll of vellum aside, and a piece of familiar, heavy parchment caught her eye.
Livia froze. She pulled the paper from the drawer. It was a draft.
* Keep them safe, Doctor.* The handwriting was sharp, elegant, and hurried. It was the exact same script as the anonymous note left on her stoop.
A cold dread pooled in Livia's stomach. She frantically pulled out more blueprints. They were anatomical schematics for the pups. Highly detailed cross-sections of the aether-core integrations.
"Livia, I found the regulator—" Gideon stopped dead in the doorway.
He looked at the papers in Livia’s hand. The color drained entirely from his face. The vellum blueprints slipped from Livia’s fingers, scattering across the floor.
"You," she breathed, her voice betraying a profound, cutting betrayal. "It was you."
Gideon stepped into the room, raising his hands in a placating gesture. "Livia, please. Let me explain."
"You left them on my stoop?" Livia’s voice rose, a mixture of anger and heartbreak. "You acted like you didn't know what they were? You dragged me into this blindly?"
"I didn't design them!" Gideon burst out, his aristocratic composure cracking. He ran a hand desperately through his dark hair. "I swear to you, I didn't make them. It was the Obsidian Syndicate. They are an underground arms-dealing ring operating in the Smog-Alleys. I... I have been tracking them for months. Using my family's wealth and influence to disrupt their operations from the shadows."
Livia stared at him, the pieces violently clicking into place. "The reclusive Lord Vane. You're a vigilante."
"They were trying to weaponize biological entities," Gideon continued, stepping closer, his eyes pleading. "They wanted to turn these pups into living, breathing EMP detonators. I infiltrated their lab three weeks ago and stole the entire litter before they could initiate the final sequence."
"Then why leave them with me?" Livia cried. "Why not bring them here?"
"Because their biological systems were collapsing, and I am not a doctor!" Gideon yelled, the raw desperation in his voice echoing in the lab. "I am an engineer! I break things, I build things, but I don't heal things. You do. You are the only person I trusted to keep them alive. And I couldn't risk the Syndicate tracking them to the Manor immediately. If I had brought them to you openly, I would have painted a target on your back."
"So you lied to me."
"I protected you!" Gideon stepped forward, grasping her shoulders gently but firmly. "I planned to fix them, find them a safe haven outside the city, and keep you entirely out of the crossfire. But the cores deteriorated too fast. When you showed up at my door in the snow... I realized I had failed. I dragged you into my war anyway."
Livia looked into his gray eyes, seeing the profound, agonizing guilt tearing him apart. He hadn't used her; he had panicked. He had tried to save the innocent lives in the only way he knew how, and he was terrified of losing her in the process.
Before she could form a reply, a massive, shuddering explosion rocked the foundation of Vane Manor.
