Chapter 7
Ash, Aether, and Confessions
❧
The explosion on the other side of the door never came. The muffled shouting had stopped.
Livia lay gasping on the floor of the vault. Her prosthetic leg was smoking, the brass blackened and warped. The copper wires had melted away. She immediately reached for the pups. They were groggy, but their cores were pulsing with a steady, calm, regulated blue light. The surge had reset their systems perfectly.
Livia scrambled to the vault door, her ruined leg dragging uselessly behind her. She reached up and pulled the internal manual release lever.
The heavy door groaned open.
The laboratory was a scene of utter mechanical devastation. Every aether-lamp had shattered. Every steam-servant had collapsed into a heap of dead gears.
And lying unconscious on the floor were twelve Syndicate enforcers. Their heavy steam-armor was dead weight, locked up completely. Their aether-rifles were burned-out husks. The EMP had instantly short-circuited every piece of technology in the room.
Except for one man.
Gideon was leaning heavily against a shattered workbench, clutching his bleeding side. He didn't rely on mechanical enhancements. He was just a man.
He looked up as the vault door opened. When he saw Livia emerge from the smoke, her face streaked with soot and tears, carrying a pile of perfectly healthy, glowing puppies, his face crumpled into an expression of profound, overwhelming relief.
Livia dropped the pups, ignoring the agonizing pain in her ruined prosthetic, and practically threw herself across the room. She crashed into Gideon’s chest, mindful of his wound, wrapping her arms around his neck and burying her face in his shoulder.
Gideon’s arms closed around her fiercely, burying his face in her hair. He was shaking.
"You brilliant, beautiful fool," Gideon choked out, pressing kisses to her temple, her cheek, her jaw. "You saved us. You saved all of us."
"You locked me in a box," Livia sobbed, pulling back to look into his eyes. "If you ever do that again, I will dismantle your steam-carriage."
Gideon let out a breathy, painful laugh. "Deal."
He reached up, cupping her face in his large, soot-stained hands. The air between them was heavy with smoke and the metallic tang of destroyed machinery, but Livia had never felt anything so pure.
"I love you, Livia," Gideon whispered, the absolute truth ringing in his voice. "No more hiding. No more shadows. I want you in the light. With me."
Livia leaned into his touch, a radiant smile breaking through her tears. "Then kiss me, My Lord. Before your hounds chew through the rest of your laboratory."
Gideon smiled, a breathtaking, unburdened expression, and pressed his lips to hers. It was a kiss that tasted of ash, adrenaline, and the promise of a future built entirely on their own terms.
