Chapter 1

Blood in the Sump

The Sump Pits smelled of oxidized copper, cheap coal smoke, and desperation. Located three levels beneath the smog-choked streets of the Iron Republic’s industrial sector, the illegal fighting ring was a cavernous dome of rusted iron and grinding exhaust fans. Suspended aether-lamps cast a sickly, flickering yellow light over the roaring crowd.
In the center of the cage, Nyx Corvus wiped a smear of blood from her split lip, her silver eyes locked on her massive, steam-augmented opponent.
The crowd screamed for a killing blow. Nyx rolled her shoulders. Beneath the scarred skin of her back, the illegal clockwork spine implants—a masterwork of miniature brass gears and aether-conductive wire—whirred to life. A familiar, searing heat bloomed at the base of her skull. Time seemed to slow.
The giant lunged, a pneumatic piston in his right arm hissing as he threw a punch that could shatter a brick wall.
Nyx didn't block. She slipped beneath the massive arc of his fist, her augmented reflexes firing with terrifying precision. She pivoted, driving the heel of her boot into the vulnerable pressure valve behind his mechanized knee. As he buckled with a roar of pain, Nyx vaulted off his massive thigh, twisting in mid-air to deliver a devastating elbow strike directly to his temple.
The giant crashed to the iron grate floor, out cold before the gears in his arm had stopped spinning.
The crowd erupted. Nyx didn't smile. She merely hopped down, her breathing perfectly even, the mechanical ticking in her spine slowing as her adrenaline receded. She grabbed her leather trench coat from the chain-link fence, ignoring the blood dripping from her knuckles.
"Impressive," a calm, resonant voice cut through the chaos.
Nyx stopped. Standing by the exit of the cage was a man who categorically did not belong in the Sump Pits. He wore a perfectly tailored, charcoal-gray three-piece suit woven with subtle, bulletproof aether-silk. His dark hair was meticulously styled, his posture impossibly straight, and his piercing blue eyes analyzed her with the cold calculation of a chess grandmaster.
Four heavily armed men in unmarked tactical gear flanked him.
Nyx’s hand instinctively dropped to the hilt of the concealed trench-knife at her thigh. "You're lost, suit. The opera house is forty blocks uptown."
"I am exactly where I intend to be, Miss Corvus," the man said. He stepped forward into the yellow light.
Nyx’s breath caught in her throat. She recognized the sharp jawline, the authoritative cadence, the face plastered across every propaganda zeppelin in the city.
President Silas Vance.
"What does the newly elected leader of the Iron Republic want in a gutter like this?" Nyx asked, her voice a low, dangerous rasp. "Slumming it?"
"Survival," Silas answered bluntly. He didn't flinch at her hostile tone. "Three days ago, I survived my second poisoning attempt in a month. The Secret Service is compromised. The Shadow Cabinet—the corrupt ministers who truly run this city—are systematically attempting to eliminate me before I can enact my reform legislation."
"Sounds like a political problem. I punch people for betting chits. I don't do politics."
"You are a former syndicate assassin with military-grade, illegal clockwork augmentations," Silas corrected smoothly. "You are the most lethal asset in this city not currently on a government payroll. And you are going to work for me."
Nyx scoffed, turning away. "I don't work for powerful men. They just use you until you break, then throw you to the wolves. Find another lapdog, Mr. President."
"Ten million republic credits," Silas said to her retreating back. "And a full, unconditional presidential pardon for every crime you committed under the Syndicate. Your record wiped completely clean."
Nyx froze. A pardon. Freedom from the constant paranoia, the bounty hunters, the shadows. She slowly turned back to face him, her eyes narrowing. "What's the catch?"
"You will live in the Presidential Spire. You will be by my side twenty-four hours a day, acting as my final line of defense," Silas explained, his gaze never leaving hers. "But a president cannot simply hire an illegal pit fighter as a bodyguard without the Shadow Cabinet executing a coup over the scandal. We need a cover."
"A cover?"
"Yes," Silas said, stepping closer. The faint scent of sandalwood and clean ozone wafted from him. "To the public, the press, and my enemies, you will not be my bodyguard. You will be my fiancée."
Nyx stared at him, letting out a harsh, incredulous laugh. "You want me to play the blushing bride? I have brass gears bolted into my spine and I sleep with a knife under my pillow."
"I don't need you to blush, Miss Corvus. I need you to keep me alive," Silas said, extending a hand toward her. "Do we have a deal?"
Nyx looked at his manicured, powerful hand, then down at her own bruised and bloodied knuckles. She was walking into a trap. Powerful men always laid traps. But the allure of the pardon was a siren song she couldn't ignore.
"Fine," Nyx said, ignoring his hand. "But if you get in my way during a fight, I'll let them shoot you."
A faint, ghostly smile touched Silas’s lips. "I expect nothing less, my dear."
