Chapter 4

The Citadel of Black Ice

The storm broke by morning, leaving a blindingly clear, bitterly cold day in its wake. They rode in silence for another twenty-four hours until the jagged, rusted spires of the Citadel came into view.
It was built into a massive, pre-collapse subterranean transit hub. The entrance was a heavily fortified cavern guarded by men with heavy machine guns and starving, vicious dogs.
As Kaelen drove the sled down the long, sloping concrete tunnel into the belly of the earth, the smell hit Silas—a sickening amalgamation of unwashed bodies, raw sewage, and the metallic tang of blood. The Citadel was lit by harsh, hissing chemical flares that cast long, grotesque shadows against the tiled walls.
It was a city of the damned. Slaves hauled heavy carts of scavenged coal. Desperate survivors huddled around trash-can fires, looking at Silas with hollow, predatory eyes.
Kaelen parked the sled in a secured bay. He hauled Silas out by his arm, his grip bruising.
"Keep your head down and your mouth shut," Kaelen ordered, dragging him through the throng of miserable humanity toward the upper levels.
The Warlord's quarters were located in what used to be a luxury transit lounge. It was warm here. Opulent, in a scavenged, post-apocalyptic way. Persian rugs covered the concrete, and heavy velvet curtains blocked out the grim reality of the lower levels.
Malacor, the Warlord of the Citadel, sat on a throne constructed of welded engine blocks and plush leather car seats. He was a massive, scarred brute of a man, draped in heavy furs, chewing on a piece of dried meat.
"The Winter Wolf," Malacor boomed, his voice echoing in the large room. "They said you were bringing me a prize, Rey. Let's see him."
Kaelen shoved Silas forward. Silas stumbled, falling to his knees on the Persian rug.
"Dr. Silas Thorne," Kaelen said, his voice devoid of emotion. "Carrier of the biometric key to the Geothermal Vault. As requested."
Malacor leaned forward, his dark eyes gleaming with avarice. He stood up and circled Silas like a predator assessing a meal. "A botanist. You look fragile, Doctor. Hard to believe you hold the keys to Eden in that scrawny neck of yours."
"The coordinates are encrypted," Silas said, trying to keep his voice steady. "They can only be accessed at the vault door, using my specific neural signature. You can't just beat them out of me."
"I know," Malacor smiled, a terrifying, jagged expression. He turned to Kaelen. "You've done well, Rey. The bounty is yours. Level three access. A heated suite. Fresh water and daily meat rations. You never have to freeze in the wastes again."
A heavy, leather pouch of Citadel tokens was tossed to Kaelen. He caught it effortlessly.
"Pleasure doing business," Kaelen said. He turned to leave.
"Kaelen!" Silas cried out, desperation finally shattering his composure. He scrambled to his feet, but two of Malacor's guards slammed the butts of their rifles into his back, forcing him back down. "Kaelen, please! You can't leave me here!"
Kaelen stopped at the door. He didn't turn around. His shoulders were rigid.
"Take the Doctor to the medical wing," Malacor ordered his guards. "Prep him for extraction."
Kaelen slowly turned his head. "Extraction?"
"Yes," Malacor said casually, sitting back down on his throne. "The biometric mesh is fused to his spinal column. The vault doors require a direct neural interface. We don't need the man, Rey. We just need his spine. The surgical team is going to crack him open and remove the graft. It's fatal, of course, but his sacrifice will ensure the survival of the Citadel."
Silas felt the blood drain entirely from his face. Fatal. They were going to carve him open.
He looked at Kaelen.
Kaelen was staring at Malacor. The stoic, emotionless mask of the Winter Wolf cracked for a fraction of a second, revealing a flash of absolute, unadulterated horror.
"You said you just needed the coordinates," Kaelen said, his voice dangerously low.
"I lied," Malacor shrugged. "Why rely on a hostage when you can just take the key? You got your money, Wolf. Go enjoy the heat."
Kaelen looked at Silas. Silas looked back, his eyes swimming with tears. This was it. The end.
* I'm sorry,* Silas mouthed silently to the man he loved.
Kaelen’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle ticked in his cheek. He looked at the heavy pouch of tokens in his hand. The price of a life. The price of warmth.
Slowly, deliberately, Kaelen turned his back on Silas and walked out the door.
The heavy iron door slammed shut with a sickening finality.
