Chapter 3
The Resonance Wastes
❧
The dead zone outside the city walls was a hallucinatory nightmare known as the Resonance Wastes.
Before the apocalypse, it had been a bustling metropolitan district. Now, the ruined skyscrapers were swallowed by towering, parasitic growths of the alien crystals. The flora was terrifyingly beautiful—massive, glowing violet blooms of jagged glass that chimed and hummed in the wind, feeding off the ambient sounds of the crumbling city.
Squad Aegis moved silently through the shadow of a collapsed overpass. The objective was a routine deep-zone patrol, scouting for a reported nest of Chorus beasts before they could migrate toward the safe zone walls.
Ren walked directly behind Jax. The Duet Kata had changed the dynamic between them. There was a tether now, an unspoken awareness of each other's physical space and breathing rhythm. Ren’s impostor syndrome hadn't vanished, but it had quieted. He had a job to do. Keep Jax alive.
The squad rounded the corner of a ruined plaza.
The silence was sudden, absolute, and deeply unnatural. The ambient chiming of the crystal flora simply stopped.
"Hold," Jax whispered, raising a clenched fist. His earpiece crackled.
* Thump.*
The ground beneath their boots vibrated. It wasn't a Swarm. Swarms were chaotic, a cacophony of scratching claws and shrieking crystal. This was a heavy, singular, rhythmic impact.
* Thump.*
"Command," Jax spoke quietly into his comms. "We have a seismic anomaly in Sector 12. Reading is localized but massive. Requesting thermal..."
The ground exploded.
A Leviathan-class Chorus beast erupted from the subterranean parking garage beneath the plaza, shattering the concrete in a shower of massive boulders and choking dust.
It was a nightmare of geometry and malice. Easily four stories tall, it resembled a centipede constructed entirely of massive, glowing black-and-purple obelisks. Its head was a terrifying, eyeless crown of vibrating tuning forks, and its maw was a grinding wood-chipper of crystal shards.
"Scatter!" Jax roared.
The squad broke formation just as the Leviathan slammed its massive head into the concrete where they had been standing.
"Aegis! Form up!" Jax yelled, sprinting to the center of the plaza, trying to draw the beast's attention. He hit a piercing high C, summoning his massive pink hard-light sword. "Echo! On me!"
Ren was already moving. He hit his baritone harmony, manifesting his blue bucklers, sliding in right behind Jax’s right shoulder.
"It's too big for the standard kata!" Ren shouted over the deafening roar of the Leviathan. The sound of the beast was like a jet engine crossed with a dying choir.
"We aim for the joints! Strip the armor!" Jax commanded, his eyes locked on the towering monster.
The Leviathan reared back, the tuning forks on its head vibrating violently. It unleashed a sonic pulse—a physical shockwave of compressed sound.
"Shield!" Jax yelled.
Ren planted his feet, pushing every ounce of air from his lungs into a heavy, sustained bass note. A massive, domed wall of blue hard-light erupted over the squad.
The sonic pulse hit the shield. The impact was agonizing. Blood sprayed from Ren’s nose as the sheer acoustic pressure threatened to crush his chest. The blue hard-light buckled, screaming under the strain, but it held.
"Now!" Ren choked out, dropping the shield.
Jax launched himself forward, using the opening. He leaped onto the shattered hood of a rusted car, propelling himself high into the air toward the Leviathan's exposed underbelly. He raised his pink hard-light sword, his tenor voice cutting through the roar of the beast, preparing to deliver a devastating, downward strike.
But the Leviathan was terrifyingly fast.
It didn't dodge. It whipped its massive, segmented tail through the air.
"Jax, look out!" Ren screamed.
A shard of black crystal, the size of a javelin, broke off from the tail as it whipped around. It flew through the air faster than a bullet.
It struck Jax mid-leap.
It didn't impale him, but the jagged edge of the crystal grazed his throat, tearing through the armored collar of his tactical gear.
Jax was thrown violently through the air, crashing hard into the rubble fifty feet away.
The pink hard-light sword vanished instantly.
"Jax!" Ren sprinted across the ruined plaza, ignoring the Leviathan as it turned its attention to the other three squad members, who were desperately firing standard-issue ballistic weapons that merely bounced off the beast's armor.
Ren slid into the rubble beside Jax.
Jax was clutching his throat, his eyes wide with shock and agony. Dark crimson blood was pooling between his fingers. He was gasping, trying to pull air into his lungs.
"Let me see, let me see," Ren panicked, pulling a med-spray from his belt and applying it to the laceration. The cut was deep, slicing dangerously close to the jugular, but the coagulant foam immediately began to seal the wound.
Jax survived the impact. But as he looked up at Ren, his pale eyes filled with absolute, unadulterated terror.
Jax opened his mouth to speak. To give an order. To sing.
Nothing came out. Only a wet, harsh, breathless hiss.
His vocal cords were damaged. The Center was silenced. The magic was gone.
"Command! We have a critical casualty!" Ren screamed into his comms, grabbing Jax by the tactical vest and dragging him behind a collapsed concrete pillar as the Leviathan roared. "Nova is down! Magic is offline! Requesting immediate Evac!"
Static hissed in his ear, followed by the cold, mechanical voice of Commander Vance.
*"Negative, Echo. The Leviathan-class acoustic signature is jamming our transport signals. A retrieval ship cannot breach that airspace without being torn apart by the soundwaves."*
"Then send backup! We can't fight that thing!" Ren pleaded, watching his three remaining squadmates retreating into the alleys, completely outmatched.
*"Squad Aegis,"* Vance’s voice echoed in the ears of the entire unit. *"The Center is compromised. Offensive capabilities are zero. The mission is a failure. Fall back to the safe zone immediately. Leave the compromised assets."*
Ren froze. The blood drained from his face. *Leave the compromised assets.* "You can't do that!" Ren screamed into the comms. "He's alive! He just can't sing!"
*"He is a liability, Echo. He cannot defend himself. Do not throw your life away for a broken instrument. Fall back. That is an order."*
The comms clicked dead.
Ren looked at Jax. Jax was staring at the comms unit on his wrist, the reality of the military’s betrayal washing over him. The golden boy, the untouchable star, had been deemed a broken instrument and thrown away in a matter of seconds.
Jax looked at Ren, his pale eyes pleading. He weakly shoved Ren’s chest, mouthing the words, *Go. Run.* Ren looked at the towering Leviathan crushing the plaza. He looked at the empty alleys where his squadmates had fled, following orders. He looked at the blood on his hands.
The impostor syndrome, the fear, the years of believing he was nothing but a disposable backup—it all collided with the cold, corporate reality of the military machine. They were all disposable.
Ren gritted his teeth, a fierce, rebellious fire igniting in his gut.
"Screw the tour," Ren snarled.
He grabbed Jax by the harness, hauling the larger boy to his feet. He slung Jax’s arm over his shoulder, taking his weight.
"We aren't dying on this stage, Jax," Ren panted, dragging the silent Center toward the looming, crumbling shadow of a nearby skyscraper. "Just keep your feet moving."
