Chapter 3

The Ash Dunes

The Ash Dunes were a vast, freezing desert of pulverized concrete and gray dust. There was no shelter, no landmarks, only an endless ocean of gray rolling beneath a toxic sky.
The trek was a brutal, agonizing crucible.
Valen’s condition deteriorated rapidly on the second day. The radiation seeping through the atmosphere was causing his royal nanites to overdrive, resulting in violent fevers that left him delirious. He coughed frequently, the spasms wracking his frail body, leaving bright red spots of blood on the inside of his breather-mask.
Silas carried him. For miles upon agonizing miles, Silas trudged through the knee-deep ash, holding Valen securely against his chest. Silas gave Valen his rations, forcing the prince to swallow the nutrient paste while Silas himself starved. He wrapped Valen in every layer of thermal clothing he possessed, enduring the freezing winds in a thin undershirt and scavenged armor.
"Put me down," Valen wept during one particularly harsh afternoon. The wind was howling, whipping the gray ash into a blinding storm. Valen felt the trembling in Silas’s arms, the profound exhaustion radiating from the man he loved. "Silas, please. You are killing yourself for me. I am a burden. Leave me in the ash."
"Shut up, Valen," Silas grunted, his voice raw from the wind, pulling the prince tighter against his chest. "I'm not leaving you."
"I am weak!" Valen sobbed, the emotional agony of his frailty finally breaking him. He hated his body. He hated the genetics that made him a prince but rendered him utterly useless. He wanted to be strong for Silas. He wanted to walk beside him, to fight for him, to protect him the way Silas protected him. Instead, he was just a parasite, draining Silas’s strength. "I am nothing but suffering. You are destroying yourself to carry a ghost."
Silas stopped walking. The wind howled around them, a vortex of gray ash.
Silas lowered Valen to the ground, carefully propping him against his knee to keep him out of the deep dust. Silas dropped to his knees in the ash, framing Valen’s pale, tear-streaked face with both hands.
"Listen to me," Silas said, his amber eyes burning with a fierce, unwavering devotion that cut through the storm. "You are not a burden. Your heart is the strongest thing I have ever known. You look at this dead world and you still have so much gentleness inside you. You think you're weak because you can't walk? Valen, it takes more strength to endure the pain you are in right now than it takes for me to carry you."
Valen looked at him, his chest heaving, the blood spotting his mask a stark contrast to his pale skin.
"I love you," Valen whispered, the words tearing from his soul. It was a desperate confession, offered in the center of a dying world. "I love you, Silas. And I cannot bear the thought of my weakness costing you your life."
Silas leaned down, pressing his forehead against Valen’s, the plastic of the breather-mask the only thing separating their lips.
"You are my life now," Silas breathed. "My life, my pulse, my reason. I will carry you to the ends of this blasted earth, my prince. We survive together, or we don't survive at all."
He kissed the center of Valen’s forehead, a vow sealed in the ash. Silas stood up, scooped Valen back into his arms, and resumed the march.
Through the long, freezing nights, they huddled together in the shallow craters of the dunes. Silas would hold Valen tightly, sharing his body heat, whispering stories of the wasteland to keep the prince’s mind off the pain. In those dark, intimate hours, their bond solidified into something unbreakable. Valen found that while his body was failing, his spirit was anchored by Silas’s love. He learned the rhythm of Silas’s heartbeat; he memorized the rough texture of his skin. He realized that suffering was bearable, as long as he wasn't suffering alone.
