Chapter 2
The Monorail Sanctuary
❧
They reached the rusted iron scaffolding at the edge of the flooded platform. Leo practically threw Maya up the first few rungs before scrambling up behind her. The metal groaned dangerously under their weight, but it held.
They climbed twenty feet up, pulling themselves into the open doors of a suspended monorail car. The ancient transit vehicle hung precariously from a massive, damaged track that spanned the flooded cavern. It was a fragile sanctuary, but through the shattered windows at the far end of the car, they could see the distant, golden light of the afternoon sun bleeding through a massive crack in the surface streets above.
Leo collapsed onto the plastic seats, his chest heaving. The adrenaline crash hit him like a physical blow. He pulled his ruined jacket tight around himself, shivering uncontrollably.
Maya crawled over to him, her eyes wide, entirely fixed on his chest.
"Leo," she whispered, her voice trembling. "How did you... the plasma. It hit you. I saw it hit you."
"I don't know," Leo choked out, backing away until his spine hit the metal wall of the train. He hugged his knees to his chest. The golden grid he had seen under his skin flashed in his mind. The terrifying reality began to click into place, aligning with the ghost stories and black-market whispers he had heard his entire life.
"The Aegis," Leo breathed, the word tasting like ash.
Maya frowned. "The old bedtime stories? The military myths?"
"They aren't myths," Leo said, his voice rising in pitch, a full-blown panic attack setting in. "Before the collapse, they engineered people. They altered their DNA so they could survive the fallout. I'm... Maya, I'm one of them. I'm a freak."
"You're not a freak!" Maya said fiercely, reaching out to grab his hands.
"I am a weapon!" Leo yelled, pulling his hands away. "I'm a genetically modified mistake! No wonder I survived the surface radiation when I was a kid. No wonder I never get sick. I'm not even human, Maya!"
Tears streamed down Leo’s face. The revelation was suffocating. He didn't want a destiny. He didn't want to be invincible. He just wanted to be a normal teenager who could hide in the dark and keep his sister safe.
Maya didn't back down. She crawled closer, grabbing his face in her small, cold hands, forcing him to look at her.
"Listen to me," Maya said, her voice carrying a quiet, absolute conviction that defied her fourteen years. "Weapons hurt people. You have never hurt anyone in your life. You pushed me out of the way. You saved me. You aren't a weapon, Leo. You're a shield."
Leo stared into her dark eyes, the terrifying truth warring with the absolute faith she had in him. A shield.
A massive, deafening *CRANG* shook the entire monorail car.
Leo and Maya were thrown to the floor as the suspended sanctuary pitched violently to the side.
Leo scrambled to the shattered window and looked down. The Hunter-Drone had reached the base of the scaffolding. Frustrated by its inability to track them up the ladder, it was using its massive, armored bulk to ram the rusted support pillars of the monorail track.
Metal shrieked in agony as another pillar buckled.
"It's bringing the whole track down!" Leo shouted, grabbing Maya’s arm.
The monorail car groaned, the floor tilting at a forty-five-degree angle. Rivets popped like gunshots. The ancient suspension cables snapped one by one, whipping through the air.
"Hold on!" Leo screamed, pulling Maya against his chest.
The final cable gave way. The world dropped out from beneath them.
