Chapter 2
The Silica Forest
❧
By the second day, the ash dunes had hardened into the sprawling, lethal nightmare of the Silica Forest.
There was no wood here. The trees were massive, jagged formations of razor-sharp crystalline structures that grew in dense, claustrophobic clusters. The wind howled through the crystalline canopy, creating a chaotic, deafening tinkling sound like a billion shattered wind chimes.
Kaelen led the way, his plasma machete humming as he carved a path through the crystalline undergrowth. Every step required absolute focus. The flora here didn't just cut; it infected.
Elara struggled behind him. Her breathing was ragged over the short-range comms. Kaelen pushed her relentlessly, allowing only four minutes of rest per hour. He checked his six constantly, his paranoia a living, breathing entity in his chest. The mercs were tracking them. He could feel it in the subtle vibrations of the earth, the way the local scavenger-fauna went dead silent miles behind them.
“Kaelen, please,” Elara begged, collapsing against the smooth trunk of a dormant silica-oak. Her boots were shredded. “Five minutes. My lungs are burning.”
“Three minutes,” Kaelen snapped, not looking back. He swept his rifle across the treeline.
Elara slid down the trunk, unclipping her canteen. “You’re pushing us too hard. If we collapse from exhaustion, we’re dead anyway.”
“If they catch us, they won't just kill you, Doctor. They’ll peel you apart for the biometrics to unlock that drive,” Kaelen said, his optics scanning the thermal spectrum. “Get up.”
“Were you always like this?” she asked, her voice uncharacteristically soft, cutting through his gruff exterior. “Or did the corporations just carve out your humanity when they put the metal in?”
Kaelen flinched, a microscopic tightening of his jaw. His mind flashed to a rain-slicked rooftop on New Vega. A younger, softer Kaelen. A joke shared with a client. A moment of distracted laughter. And then the sniper’s bullet shattering the VIP’s skull.
“The metal just makes me efficient,” Kaelen lied, his voice dropping to a dangerous growl. “Keep moving, Vance.”
He turned away from her, and that was the moment the forest attacked.
A predatory silica-vine, triggered by Elara’s body heat, lashed out from the canopy. It was a blur of translucent, jagged spikes aimed directly at her throat.
Kaelen didn't think. Instinct and augmented reflexes overrode logic. He lunged backward, shoving Elara to the dirt. The vine whipped past her, burying its razor-edge deep into the unarmored gap between Kaelen’s tactical pauldron and his collarbone.
Fire exploded in his veins. Kaelen roared, bringing his plasma machete down in a vicious arc, severing the vine. It retracted into the canopy, thrashing wildly.
Kaelen dropped to his knees, his biological hand clutching his neck. The wound wasn't deep, but the edges of the laceration were already turning a sickly, necrotic black.
“Kaelen!” Elara scrambled to her feet, her medical training instantly taking over. She pulled his hand away, her fingers deft and urgently gentle. “It’s a neurotoxin. Lie down. Lie still!”
For the first time since the crash, Kaelen couldn't argue. The world tilted violently, the crystalline trees blurring into a kaleidoscope of pain.
