Chapter 2
The Interrogation
❧
The Enforcer Interrogation Shuttle was a floating tomb of brushed steel and claustrophobic gray light. Kaelen sat forcefully restrained in the center of the holding bay, his stolen plasma drive resting on a steel table just out of reach. The hum of the shuttle’s thrusters indicated they had already achieved low orbit.
The heavy blast doors hissed open, and Lyra stepped inside. She pressed a sequence on the wall panel. "Leave us," she ordered the two armed guards flanking the door. "And cut the surveillance feeds. This piece of trash might have underworld contacts, and I want the intel off the official record."
The guards nodded, stepping out and sealing the door behind them. The security cameras in the corners of the room powered down with a soft click.
They were alone.
For a long moment, the heavy silence of the shuttle stretched between them. The icy mask Lyra wore began to fracture. Her shoulders dropped a fraction of an inch, and the cold superiority drained from her eyes, leaving behind a frantic, desperate exhaustion.
"Did you really have to steal from the Central Docks?" she whispered, pacing toward him. "Are you trying to get yourself killed?"
Kaelen yanked at his mag-cuffs, the chains rattling violently. "Don't play the concerned superior with me, Lyra. You made your feelings perfectly clear three years ago. You stood in front of the entire cadet regiment and called me a worthless, incompetent liability. You bullied me until I broke. You lied about my test scores, my combat readiness, my *character*."
His voice cracked, the raw agony of his internal wound bleeding out into the sterile room. "I loved you. And you looked me in the eye and told me I was nothing."
Lyra stopped, squeezing her eyes shut. When she opened them, they were shining with unshed tears. "I had to," she choked out.
"Why? Because associating with a lower-tier cadet hurt your promotion chances?" Kaelen laughed bitterly.
"Because the regime was harvesting the top cadets!" Lyra shouted, her voice breaking. She slammed her hands onto the table. "Central Command wasn't assigning the elite graduates to deep-space fleets, Kaelen. They were executing them. They were ripping out their neural implants to power the new tactical AI mainframes."
Kaelen froze. The breath vanished from his lungs. "What?"
"You were at the top of the class," Lyra sobbed, the tears finally spilling over. "You were going to be chosen. The only way to save you was to make them think you were broken. I had to make you fail. I had to make you hate me so you'd leave the military completely. I destroyed your career to save your life!"
The sheer weight of the revelation hit Kaelen like a physical blow. The years of agonizing insecurity, the bitter struggle to survive in the slums, the endless nights hating her—it had all been a shield. A brutal, agonizing lie crafted from love.
"Lyra..." Kaelen breathed, his fingers loosening around the EMP detonator.
Before another word could be spoken, the shuttle’s ambient lighting snapped from sterile white to a violent, strobing crimson. A deafening klaxon wailed through the hull.
"Warning," the ship’s automated voice droned. "Treason detected. Commander Lyra’s clearance revoked. Engaging internal defense protocols."
Lyra’s eyes went wide. "Command... they must have intercepted my encrypted logs. They know."
From the ceiling of the interrogation bay, four automated defense drones dropped down, their plasma turrets powering up with a lethal whine.
