Chapter 1

The Cryo-Arena Breach

The NBU Cryo-Arena was Ryder Kaelen’s only true sanctuary. Suspended in the center of the massive, neon-lit zero-G stadium, Ryder moved with fluid, predatory grace. His anti-grav skates hummed with contained energy, projecting pale blue thruster trails against the pristine white ice of the spherical rink.
Ryder gripped his magnetized kinetic stick, his heavily padded carbon-fiber gloves creaking under the strain. He was running a brutal, high-velocity drill, slamming a weighted tungsten practice puck against the reinforced perimeter boards. The rhythmic *crack, ping, crack* of the puck was a meditation. It drowned out the memories of the burning colony world he had fled as a child. It drowned out the suffocating fear of powerlessness that haunted his every waking moment. On the ice, Ryder was the captain. On the ice, he was invincible.
The meditation shattered with the deafening sound of exploding glass.
Ryder slammed his skates into a hard stop, his momentum throwing a wave of ice crystals into the zero-G field. Above him, the arena’s massive atmospheric geo-dome cracked and caved inward. A hailstorm of jagged, reinforced polymer rained down onto the rink.
Through the gaping hole in the roof, a figure plummeted. It wasn't a piece of debris. It was a girl, clutching a glowing data-drive to her chest, her dark hair wildly whipping around her face. She hit the angled force-cushion of the upper bleachers, tumbling violently before skidding out onto the frictionless ice.
Ryder engaged his thrusters, launching himself toward her. He recognized her from the quantum-engineering department—Elara Vance. She was bruised, gasping for air, and frantically trying to scramble backward on the slick surface.
"Hey!" Ryder shouted, dropping his visor. "Are you out of your mind? The dome—"
"We have to run!" Elara screamed, her voice cracking with pure terror. She pointed a trembling finger toward the shattered roof. "They're coming!"
Three heavy, metallic thuds shook the arena.
Ryder looked up. Dropping through the breach were three towering figures clad in matte-black, angular armor. Their faces were featureless, save for a single, glowing horizontal red optic visor. Corporate strike-synthetics. Heavily armed, completely illegal on university grounds, and notoriously lethal.
The lead synthetic raised a plasma rifle, its targeting laser cutting a crisp red line through the chilled air, painting a dot directly on Elara's chest.
Instinct, forged in the fires of a childhood warzone, seized Ryder’s muscles. He didn’t think. He didn't hesitate. He dropped his center of gravity, engaging the maximum output on his hover-skates.
"Down!" Ryder roared. He checked Elara hard, knocking her flat against the ice just as a searing bolt of superheated plasma vaporized the space where her heart had been.
The synthetics adjusted their aim, but Ryder was already moving. He treated the firefight like a penalty kill. He spotted the tungsten practice puck floating lazily in the zero-G field a few yards away. Ryder pivoted, drawing his kinetic stick back. He channeled the full force of his augmented suit into his shoulders and swung.
The stick connected with a thunderous *crack*. The tungsten puck became a makeshift railgun projectile, crossing the distance in a blur of gray. It slammed dead-center into the lead synthetic’s visor. The machine's head snapped back with a spray of white synthetic fluid, and it crumpled to the ice.
"Move!" Ryder grabbed Elara by the collar of her jacket, hauling her to her feet. "The ice-maintenance shafts! Go!"
The remaining two synthetics opened fire, chewing the perimeter boards into molten slag. Ryder positioned his heavy, carbon-fiber shoulder pads between the laser fire and Elara, trusting his athletic armor to absorb the glancing blow as they threw themselves into the dark, narrow chute of the Zamboni maintenance tunnel.
