Chapter 3

The Whispering Canopy

Elara set the *Starling* down in a small, rocky clearing at the edge of the jungle. The moment the boarding ramp lowered, the oppressive heat and humidity of the Whispering Canopy rolled over them like a physical wave.
The jungle was beautiful, yet entirely lethal. Towering, twisted trees with bark like black iron spiraled into the sky. Their leaves were not green, but glowed with eerie, pulsating hues of cyan, magenta, and sickly yellow. The air hummed with the sound of unseen, clicking insects and the soft, unsettling rustle of flora that seemed to move of its own volition.
"Stay close," Kaelen ordered, drawing a heavy plasma blade from his thigh sheath. The weapon ignited with a hum, casting a sharp blue light against the alien foliage.
"I've navigated hostile biomes before, Kaelen. I don't need a babysitter," Elara retorted, checking the power cell on her plasma pistol and tapping the holographic map on her wrist projector. "The Vault is three klicks north. Follow me."
They plunged into the jungle. For the first hour, the tension between them was thicker than the humid air. They hacked through thick, glowing vines and waded through shallow pools of luminescent sludge. Kaelen was constantly shifting his position, instinctively trying to put himself between Elara and any perceived threat. It infuriated her, and yet, a small, treacherous part of her heart ached at the familiarity of his protection.
"Stop hovering," she hissed as he batted away a hanging fern that looked suspiciously like a bundle of venomous tentacles.
"My instincts are difficult to suppress," Kaelen replied evenly, his eyes scanning the dense tree-line. "Especially when you insist on walking directly into a cluster of Razor-Orchids."
Elara stopped, looking down. Barely an inch from her boot was a cluster of beautiful, crystalline flowers with petals sharp enough to slice through durasteel. She swallowed hard, taking a careful step back. "Right. Thanks."
"You are welcome."
Suddenly, the soft, ambient clicking of the jungle stopped. The silence was absolute, heavy, and terrifying.
"Elara, don't move," Kaelen said, his voice dropping to a barely audible whisper. The bioluminescent markings on his skin flared a bright, warning red.
The ground beneath them trembled. A massive, serpentine root erupted from the soil, whipping through the air. It was thicker than a man’s torso, covered in barbed thorns and dripping with caustic sap. A Viper-Vine.
It lunged straight for Elara.
She barely had time to raise her pistol. Before she could fire, Kaelen tackled her, wrapping his large body around hers and rolling them out of the path of destruction. The vine slammed into the spot where she had just been standing, shattering the stone beneath the moss.
"Get up!" Kaelen roared, hauling her to her feet.
Three more vines erupted from the earth, surrounding them. They were hunting in a pack.
Elara didn't freeze. She fell instantly into the rhythm they had perfected years ago. They stood back-to-back, a seamless unit of human agility and Zendari strength. Elara fired precise, blinding bolts of plasma, severing the tips of the vines as they struck. Kaelen moved like a dancer, his heavy blade humming as he cleaved through the thick, woody appendages, his armor absorbing the glancing blows of the thorns.
"Left flank!" Elara shouted, ducking under a sweeping strike and firing blindly over Kaelen's shoulder.
Kaelen pivoted, bringing his blade down in a devastating arc, severing the largest vine at its base. It thrashed violently, spraying acidic sap, before falling dead to the jungle floor.
Within minutes, the immediate area was a graveyard of smoldering, severed roots.
Elara stood panting, her pistol lowered, her chest heaving. The adrenaline was a narcotic, erasing the exhaustion of the trek. She turned to Kaelen. He was breathing heavily, a deep scratch across his cheek where a thorn had grazed his silver skin.
Without thinking, Elara reached out. Her fingers lightly brushed his cheek, wiping away a drop of violet blood.
Kaelen went perfectly still. His golden eyes locked onto hers, the pupils dilating until they were almost entirely black. The air between them suddenly felt charged, heavy with static electricity. The chaotic noise of the jungle faded into white noise.
Her hand lingered on his jaw. His skin was burning hot, radiating the intense biological heat of a Zendari in combat. He leaned subtly into her touch, a small, involuntary movement of profound yearning.
"You're bleeding," she whispered, her voice trembling.
"It is nothing," he murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips. Slowly, hesitantly, he raised a hand, his large, calloused fingers gently wrapping around her wrist, holding her hand against his face. "Elara..."
The vulnerability in his voice shattered her defenses. She wanted to lean in. She wanted to close the agonizing gap between them and lose herself in the absolute certainty of his bond.
A sharp, artificial *beep* from her wrist-projector shattered the moment.
Elara jumped back, her face flushing crimson, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She looked at the holographic map projecting from her wrist. The waypoint was blinking green.
"We're here," she said, her voice strained, pointing to a massive, overgrown rock formation a few yards ahead. "The Precursor Vault."
Kaelen slowly lowered his hand, the fierce light in his eyes dimming slightly, masked once again by the stoic commander. "Then let us finish this."
