Chapter 1

The wind at the edge of the world tasted of ozone and ancient ice. Kaelen stumbled, his boots skidding on the translucent quartz of the Crystal Precipice. His side ached where a manticore’s quill had pierced his armor two days prior, a wound earned while shielding Caspian during their ascent. He leaned heavily on his sword, his breath coming in ragged gasps that turned to silver mist in the thin air of Aethelgard.
"We’re here, Cas," Kaelen rasped, forcing a bloody grin. "The Star-Core. We actually made it."
Caspian stood a few feet away, his white mage-silks untouched by the grime of the road. He looked like a statue carved from moonlight, every hair in place, his expression one of serene, practiced composure. He didn't rush to Kaelen’s side. Instead, he adjusted his velvet cuffs and looked out over the sea of clouds.
"Indeed," Caspian said, his voice as smooth as polished river stone. "Though 'we' is a bit of a generous term, don’t you think, darling? You spent half the climb bleeding on the trail. It was quite unsightly."
Kaelen flinched. The remark poked at a bruise that had been darkening for years. "I was protecting you. I thought—"
"You thought your brawn was a gift to me," Caspian interrupted, finally turning. He walked toward Kaelen with the grace of a predator. He reached out, his gloved fingers tilting Kaelen’s chin up. It was a gesture that usually felt like affection, but here, under the harsh light of the stars, it felt like an inspection. "You’ve always been so wonderfully dull, Kaelen. A blunt instrument for a sharp mind."
Kaelen tried to step back, but his feet wouldn't move. He looked down and saw a faint, violet glow pulsing around his ankles. Translucent magical bands had fused his boots to the quartz floor.
"Cas? What are you doing? The ritual—we need to start the ritual together."
"There is no 'together' in godhood," Caspian whispered. He reached into Kaelen’s satchel and withdrew the Star-Core. The artifact hummed, sensing the proximity of the sky-altar. Caspian’s eyes reflected the gold light, his gentlemanly facade melting into a look of cold, ecstatic greed.
"You're hurt," Kaelen pleaded, confusion warring with a rising, icy dread. "You're not yourself. Let me help you."
Caspian laughed, a sharp, melodic sound that cut deeper than any blade. "I am finally myself. You were the pack mule, Kaelen. The shield. Did you really think a man of my breeding would spend eternity with a common sellsword who smells of sweat and cheap ale? I tolerated your touch because it bought me safety. Now, it buys me the world."
Kaelen lunged forward, but the paralysis spell snapped upward, locking his joints. He was a prisoner in his own skin, forced to watch as Caspian walked to the very edge of the precipice. The mage didn't look back as he began the incantation. The Star-Core began to dissolve, its essence flowing into Caspian’s veins, turning his eyes into twin suns.
Caspian paused for a moment, returning to the frozen Kaelen. He leaned in close, the heat from the Core radiating off him. He pressed a soft, lingering kiss to Kaelen’s forehead—the ultimate insult of a gentleman.
"Thank you for being so very useful," Caspian murmured.
With a flourish of his cloak, Caspian stepped off the edge. He didn't fall. He rose, a streak of gold light ascending toward the heavens, leaving a vacuum of silence behind.
As the power of the Core vanished from the island, the Crystal Precipice groaned. Deep, jagged cracks sprinted across the quartz floor. Kaelen, still paralyzed, could only watch as the ground beneath his feet shattered. The floating island began to tilt, shedding massive shards of glass into the void. Without a word, without a savior, Kaelen slipped into the abyss, his eyes fixed on the golden star his lover had become, until the clouds swallowed him whole.
