Chapter 1
Chapter 1
❧
The sunset bled across the frost-covered stone of the Obsidian Training Ring, casting long, jagged shadows that looked like reaching claws. I spat a mouthful of crimson onto the black rock, my lungs burning with every ragged breath. The air tasted of ozone and old, dried blood—the permanent cologne of a place designed to break boys into men, or simply to break them.
"Still breathing, Wei Lan?" Zhao’s voice was a jagged blade, dripping with the casual cruelty of the high-born. He stepped forward, the silk of his sect robes whispering against the stone. "You’re persistent, I’ll give you that. But a weed that refuses to be pulled only needs a heavier boot."
I looked up at him through a curtain of tangled hair. My ribs throbbed with a familiar, agonizing rhythm. In my first life, this was where I had begged. I had crawled through the slush, sobbing for mercy that never came, only to have Zhao’s boot snap my spine and sever my connection to the heavens. I remembered the years of agony that followed—the needles they drove into my suppressed meridians, the slow, rotting torture of a life without power.
But as I stared at the frost on the ground, a cold, crystalline clarity settled over my soul. The phantom pains of my future death acted as an anchor. I wasn’t a terrified fifteen-year-old anymore; I was a ghost who had clawed his way back from the abyss.
"You talk too much, Zhao," I rasped. My voice sounded thin, but steady.
Zhao froze, his eyes widening in brief surprise before darkening into a murderous rage. "What did you say, trash?"
He didn't wait for an answer. He pulled back his leg, his Qi swirling in a violent, turbulent vortex around his foot. It was the *Heavenly Kick*, a technique meant to pulverize stone and spirit alike. In my memory, this move was a blur of unstoppable force. Now, with the eyes of an ancient soul, I saw the flaws—the slight tremor in his knee, the waste of energy in his stance.
* Nine Cycles of the Abyssal Heart,* I whispered internally. It was a forbidden mantra, one I had discovered in the forbidden archives of a fallen sect decades from now. I felt my shattered Qi respond, stitching together like jagged lightning. I didn't try to heal my injuries; I channeled the very pain of them, turning the agony of my bruised flesh into a localized shield of raw, defiant energy.
"Die!" Zhao screamed.
The strike came like a falling mountain. I didn't dodge. I didn't flinch. As his heavy boot connected with my chest, I leaned into the blow. The sound of the impact echoed through the silent ring like a thunderclap.
Zhao’s triumphant grin faltered. His foot hadn't crashed through my ribs. It had stopped dead against my sternum, held fast by a pressure he couldn't understand. I reached out, my fingers like iron talons, and gripped his ankle.
"My turn," I whispered.
I pushed the Abyssal Qi through my palm and directly into his meridian gate. I felt his ego shatter at the same moment his Spirit Root buckled. He let out a strangled, high-pitched yelp as I twisted his leg, sending him crashing into the frozen dirt. I stood up slowly, the cold wind whipping my hair back, feeling the sudden, glorious silence of a debt being paid.
Zhao lay in the frost, gasping, his eyes wide with a terror he had never known. He tried to summon his power, but it was gone—leaked into the cold earth, leaving him as empty as the "trash" he had once despised.
I didn't strike again. I didn't need to. I looked toward the horizon, where the sun was finally sinking behind the jagged peaks of the Azure Cloud Sect. The path ahead was long and stained with the blood of those who would try to stop me, but for the first time in two lifetimes, I was the one holding the blade. I was Wei Lan, and I was finally, truly alive.
