Chapter 1
Chapter 1
❧
The first thing Kaelen felt was the grit of sand in his expensive leather shoes. The second thing he felt was the terrifyingly sharp gaze of the woman standing across from him.
"Kaelen?" the woman whispered, her violet eyes flashing with a mix of concern and impatience. "The priest asked you a question. Don’t tell me you’ve developed a weak heart now that the storm is rolling in."
Kaelen blinked, his brain screaming. *Where am I? Who is Kaelen?* Memories that weren't his own flickered like a dying lightbulb—spreadsheets, fluorescent office lights, and a final, sharp pain in his chest from a triple-espresso-fueled heart attack. That life was gone. Now, he was standing under a swaying floral archway on a beach that looked like a postcard from a fever dream.
"I—" Kaelen started, but his voice was drowned out by a deafening crack of thunder.
The scene was absolute bedlam. To his left, a rogue golden retriever was howling at the sky, its leash tangled around a massive centerpiece of enchanted lilies that were beginning to glow a frantic, pulsing red. The wind whipped the white silk canopy above them, snapping the poles like toothpicks. Guest in ornate, half-armor finery were ducking for cover as the tropical sunset turned a bruised, supernatural purple.
A translucent blue box flickered in the corner of his vision: **[SYSTEM INITIALIZING: Synchronization at 88%. Complete the Soul-Bond Ritual (Marriage) to stabilize vessel. Failure to commit will result in Immediate Deletion.]**
Kaelen’s blood ran cold. He wasn't just getting married; he was negotiating for his literal existence.
"The rings!" someone screamed.
A small, winged lemur—the designated ring bearer—shrieked as a gust of wind lifted it off its feet. The creature tumbled toward the churning whitecaps of the ocean, clutching a velvet box.
"The Soul-Rings!" Elara shouted, her hand instinctively dropping to the hilt of the sword strapped to her thigh. "If they hit the salt water, the contract is void!"
Kaelen didn't think. The corporate instinct to meet a deadline took over, transformed by the strange, lithe strength of his new body. He bolted. He dove past the tangled golden retriever, ignored the stinging spray of the sand, and lunged toward the shoreline. He felt a surge of heat in his veins—a remnant of the original Kaelen’s magic—as he performed a desperate, mid-air horizontal leap.
His fingers snapped shut around the velvet box inches before the lemur hit the surf. He tumbled into the wet sand, soaked and gasping, but the rings were dry.

He looked up to find Elara standing over him. The wind was howling, tossing her dark hair across her face, but she was laughing. It wasn't a mocking laugh; it was the sound of someone who lived for the thrill of a fight. She reached down, her armored gauntlet clicking as she offered him a hand.
"You always were a dramatic idiot," she said, pulling him to his feet with effortless strength. She leaned in close, the scent of sea salt and ozone clinging to her. "But you’re *my* dramatic idiot. Are we doing this, or do I have to drag you to the altar by your tie?"
Kaelen looked at the crashing waves, the chaotic guests, and the glowing purple eyes of the woman who seemed to be the only stable thing in this mad new world. In his old life, he had been afraid of everything—deadlines, commitment, cholesterol. Here, death was literally at his heels, and yet, for the first time, he felt awake.
He gripped her hand back, hard. "I'm not going anywhere."
They marched back to the crumbling altar. The priest, looking harried and half-drowned, held up a trembling hand. "Then, by the power of the Tides and the Seven Skies, I pronounce you—"
A bolt of lightning struck the nearby palms, illuminating the beach in a brilliant white flash.
"—Husband and Wife!"
Kaelen pulled Elara toward him, meeting her lips just as the heavens opened up. The rain was warm, the wind was fierce, and the blue box in his mind finally turned a solid, comforting gold.
**[Integration Complete. Welcome to your new life, Kaelen.]**
As the guests cheered through the downpour and the golden retriever finally broke free to join their embrace, Kaelen realized that while the world was ending in a storm, his new life was just beginning. He didn't know how to wield a sword or how to navigate a world with winged lemurs, but as Elara grinned at him, he knew he was exactly where he was supposed to be.
The wedding was a disaster, but the marriage was a triumph.
